Assistant/Associate/ Senior Co-op Coordinator

About the Opportunity

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) is the home of the Experiential Liberal Arts, a continuous cycle of learning, acting, and reflecting inside and outside the classroom. The college collaborates across the university, the Northeastern network, and with partners around the globe on research, teaching, and engagement with communities.

Cooperative Education (co-op) incorporates professional experience into the academic journey and is an integral part of a Northeastern education. Our philosophy is that classroom learning is enriched by hands-on application of skills and competencies in professional settings, and professional development is enhanced by classroom practice. All Northeastern students who pursue co-op do so with the support of a Co-op Coordinator in their college.

CSSH seeks to fill two Co-op Coordinator positions to support undergraduate and graduate students as well as employer partners in navigating the co-op program. One position will primarily support students in the Department of Political Science as well as some students in the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs. The other position will primarily support students in the Department of Economics as well as some students in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. These assignments may evolve over time based on college needs.

This is a full-time, open-rank, non-tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Co-op Coordinator, Associate Co-op Coordinator or Senior Co-op Coordinator, depending on prior experience.

Responsibilities:

Student Teaching and Advising
The Co-op Coordinator will prepare students for the co-op search and work experience by teaching the co-op preparation curriculum and through individual career advising meetings. Preparation includes teaching resume writing, interviewing skills, professional behavior and communication skills, workplace ethics, and other relevant learning objectives. The Co-op Coordinator will be available to advise students during their co-op work experiences and will provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their co-op experiences. The Co-op Coordinator will collaborate with college faculty, administration and other co-op coordinators, as appropriate, to help students integrate their co-op and academic experiences.

Employer Development and Management
The Co-op Coordinator will work with hiring managers and human resources contacts to retain ongoing co-op partnerships and develop new ones. The Co-op Coordinator will promote opportunities to students, maintain a current understanding of the industry/field, employers, and positions, and meet with faculty, staff, alumni, and other parties to ensure a strong connection between higher education and industry, government, and non-profits.

Service
The Co-op Coordinator will perform co-op, departmental, college, and university service as agreed upon by the Co-op Coordinator and the Director of CSSH Cooperative Education. Further, the Co-op Coordinator will be encouraged to engage in service opportunities outside the university to enhance the reputation of the co-op program and the university.

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent credential is required by the employment start date.
  • A minimum of three years of professional work experience is required. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of demonstrated excellence in roles outside of or within higher education, including in development and counseling of students, industry partnerships, human resources, recruiting or similar areas.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and proficiency in computer/technology and database maintenance are required.
  • Familiarity with and interest in emerging career-relevant technologies, including Generative AI.
  • Proven success in collaborating with a team and in working autonomously are required. The ideal candidate is a self-starter and independently motivated to serve students and advance College goals.
  • Experience working with an international staff/student population is valued.
