Department Overview

The Field Service Organization (FSO) is dedicated to supporting the implementation and ongoing maintenance of sophisticated communications systems for our customers. This involves a comprehensive range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: deployment, optimization, and repair of infrastructure, Nice public safety loggers, 911/ECW/Airbus equipment, subscribers, Microwave, Computers, Servers, and Network equipment. This work is performed both internally and externally to Motorola Solutions.

The department works collaboratively with a variety of internal and external partners—including System Managers, Engineers, the Sales team, Project Managers, System Technologists, and service partners—to successfully complete assigned tasks. Given the nature of supporting public safety customers, the FSO operates under a mandatory 100% on-call status.


Job Description

Responsible for the post-sale installation, optimization, maintenance, and management of complex communication systems. This role focuses on proactively maintaining optimal system performance, responding to system-level alarms/errors, and performing advanced troubleshooting, hardware, and software installation and optimization. The Sr. Field Service Technician ensures system availability through routine maintenance and continuous performance monitoring.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform installation, optimization, and maintenance on various public safety systems, including: VHF, UHF, and 700/800 public radio systems, 911/Emergency Communications Workflow (ECW)/Airbus equipment, Next Generation 911 (NG911) infrastructure, and NICE public safety logging systems.

  • Execute preventative maintenance routines, focusing on trend analysis and documentation to ensure proper system operation.

  • Develop technical solutions for complex problems encountered during system implementation, upgrades, or support issues.

  • Apply extensive knowledge of the latest technologies and troubleshooting techniques in transport, communications, and RF systems.

  • Collaborate with System Managers, Engineering, Project Management, Sales, System Technologists, and partners to design, implement, optimize, and cut-over advanced communication systems that meet or exceed customer expectations.

Essential Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Education/Certification: Associate’s Degree, EET, Technical Certification, Project Management Certification, IT Certification, OR Military Technical Certification is required. CET is required within 6 months of hire. FCC License and industry certifications are a plus.

Technical Expertise:

  • Strong working knowledge of P25 radio systems and trunking/SmartZone systems.

  • Strong knowledge of wired/wireless communication systems, including Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN).

  • Proficiency in computer network installation, configuration, and maintenance, including cabling, routers, switches, and bridges.

  • Strong knowledge of NICE public safety logging systems.

  • Strong knowledge of standard telephony, dedicated data circuits, and packet switching techniques.

  • Experience with one or more of the following: P25 Systems, NICE public safety loggers, LMR RF systems, wired/wireless communication systems, networking equipment, and IT networks.

  • Experience in the configuration and testing of Motorola two-way radio and subscriber products.

  • Proficient in the use of optimization and testing equipment (e.g., Communications Systems Analyzers, watt meters, TIMS sets, CPS, RSS, Antenna Systems Analyzers (FDRs), T1 test sets).

  • Software Proficiency: Highly computer literate with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.

Professional Skills:

  • Strong self-management skills and self-motivation to perform duties with minimal direct supervision.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with internal Motorola teams (Sales, Engineering, Project Management, Customer Service), customers, and subcontractor partners.

  • Ability to quickly solve customer problems under stressful situations.

  • Capable of performing troubleshooting at the sub-system level as a Subject Matter Expert, striving for optimal system performance.

  • Able to develop and present technical training and provide guidance on integrating new tools/solutions into team operations.

Candidate Requirements:

  • The Sr. Field Service Technician MUST live a commutable distance to South of San Jose and up to North of Sacramento as majority of the Public Safety customers are located in that territory.  

  • Must be willing to travel 25% - 50% of the time and live within 50 miles from the coverage area.

  • Must be a US Citizen and able to obtain background clearance as required by US government customers.

  • Must have a current, valid driver’s license and no traffic violations.

  • Ability to be on-call 24/7/365

  • Must be able to successfully pass and maintain the ability to pass background checks and obtain security clearances.

  • FCC license and industry certifications such as ETA are a plus.

  • CET certifications through CompTIA Network+ and/or Security+ is highly desirable.

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required. Employer work permit sponsorship is not available for this position.

This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent fingerprint background check administered by Motorola Solutions Inc. customers.

Target Base Salary Range: $75,000 - $85,000 USD

Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law, we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate.


Basic Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in the following areas: LMR, RF Systems, Radio Communications, Radio Frequency, Motorola equipment, Wired/Wireless Communication Systems, IT Systems, Telecommunications, Public Safety, Engineering, Networking Equipment, IP Networking, Solutions Architecture, ASTRO 25, P25, WAVE VoIP, or Military experience.

  • Must be able to obtain background clearance as required by government customers.
