Our core program is the preparation and delivery of healthy, delicious meals to our homebound neighbors and other programs that support our community. THE POSITION
The Deputy Director (part-time) is on the leadership team at Meals on Wheels, supporting and reporting to the Executive Director (ED). The primary responsibility is staff management, with additional supplemental responsibilities. The first 6 weeks must be entirely onsite; after that, the DD may work offsite 1 day/week. NOTE: This position is cross-posted as either a part-time or full-time position depending on the candidate; you may apply to either or both positions.
· Staff Management and Human Resources (85%)
Hires, onboards, supervises, mentors, and offboards staff, with a focus on team building and individual staff development. Works closely with the ED, bringing Reviews progress on projects with staff weekly and conducts annual reflections with input from the ED. Leads weekly staff meetings and team meetings. Develops job descriptions in coordination with the ED. Coordinates payroll and HR compliance with the Operations Manager. Tracks staff leave and time off. May in future manage payroll and benefits.
· Team Participation & Leadership (15%)
Participation. Each staff person contributes to the entire organization as a part of the team, including participation at our annual Celebration event honoring volunteers and annual Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction; staffs at least two of our tabling events alongside volunteers (currently Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Co-op Earth Day, Takoma Park Folk Festival, and Alternative Gift Fair)). The DD will support our mission by periodically drive a route or work in the kitchen when needed. Each staff person is also expected to participate in professional development and training each year.
Leadership. Contributes to the development and evaluation of goals, objectives, and plans. Participates in future planning and implementation of plans. Reviews or develops policies and procedures, making recommendations to the ED. In the absence of the ED, assumes their responsibilities. May represent the organization at conferences, meetings, and other public venues.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
· Minimum of 3 years’ experience in staff management or team supervision, with a demonstrated ability to build and support a cohesive team. Committed to supporting and mentoring staff; experienced in conducting performance reviews, leading team meetings, and fostering a positive workplace culture.
· Values Alignment with the culture statement, vision, mission, and values of Meals on Wheels and commitment to upholding the terms of the staff handbook and ensuring legal compliance for the health of the organization.
· Operational Competence: Knowledge of day-to-day nonprofit operations, including HR coordination, onboarding, offboarding, and payroll support. Comfortable working with an Operations Manager and supporting compliance.
· Organizational Insight: Strong strategic thinking and planning skills; able to contribute to goal setting, policy development, and organizational growth initiatives.
· Communication Skills: strong written and verbal communication skills; able to lead meetings, draft or revise policies, and represent the organization in professional settings.
· Adaptability and Initiative: Enjoys working as part of a small team. Willing to step in wherever needed—whether supporting a special event, filling in on a delivery route, or helping in the kitchen.
· Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with SharePoint, Microsoft365 applications, and HR or payroll platforms. Comfortable learning new systems.
· Education: Bachelor's degree or higher; a degree in nonprofit management, human services, public administration, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.
HOURS, COMPENSATION, AND BENEFITS. The DD regularly works 20-25 hours/week (exact number of hours to be determined by the successful applicant and the ED) and supports the organization when the ED is on vacation or sabbatical leave. Onsite time is required weekly with some remote work possible. Compensation includes health insurance (medical, dental, and vision). Benefits include paid vacation starting at 3 weeks/year with the option for additional unpaid leave; 10 days paid sick leave; 5 days paid dependent leave; and other benefits as described in the Staff Handbook.
