At Vellum, our mission is to be the primary platform companies use to bring AI into production. AI is the biggest technology shift since the internet – the applications of it are everywhere! We expect the world to be dramatically different in the future as foundation models get better and better. We intend to be the platform layer that brings this amazing technology to life in production use cases.
We enable companies to generate real business value from AI / LLMs. Despite the promise of AI, few companies have built production use cases. Developers are faced with an ever evolving landscape of models, hosting providers and challenges with evaluation and observability. We’ve seen companies spend months of engineering time building good tooling for this (time which could be spent on their core end user facing product) yet despite this, they struggle to get great results from AI and fall short of delivering incredible user experiences. Our platform provides companies best-in-class tooling for developing AI applications from beginning to end, including tools to facilitate experimentation, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring. We also often share our expertise with customers building these applications.
We have over 150 paying customers and are growing 10-15% MoM, largely driven by organic inbound traffic. The market opportunity in front of us is massive and we have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to define the emerging LLM development market.
We’ve raised $10m to date, and are backed by top investors like Y Combinator, Rebel Fund, Eastlink Capital, Arash Ferdowsi (co-founder of Dropbox), Dharmesh Shah (co-founder of Hubspot), Dan Scholnick (board member of Weights & Biases, Docker, New Relic), and Divya Bhat (former YC group partner, 2x CEO). We announced our fundraise on TechCrunch here: https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/11/prompt-engineering-startup-vellum-ai/
We’re excited to build our founding team. This initial team will play a key role in the long-term growth of Vellum.
P.S: Why the name Vellum?
Vellum is a type of paper - the Magna Carta was written on Vellum. We intend to be the standard source of record in production
You can’t spell Vellum without LLM 😉
As Chief of Staff at Vellum, you’ll work directly with our founders (Akash, Sidd and Noa) on the highest-leverage priorities across the company. This is a unique role for someone who wants to operate at the intersection of strategy, operations, and execution in a fast-moving AI startup. You’ll be a force multiplier, taking ownership of ambiguous, critical initiatives and pushing them forward independently.
What this looks like in practice:
Company Strategy
Continue iterating on Vellum’s positioning and how we evolve to stay ahead in a fast-moving market
Own competitive intelligence and synthesize what we’re hearing from the market into company-level strategy
Keep up to date on changes in AI landscape and implications that has for us
Run point for preparing board and investor materials
Critical Projects
Work with the founders to run point on any new high priority initiative in the business. Examples would include rolling out usage based pricing or running our setting up our post sale function
Customer Insight
Deeply understand how our customers are using the product and what value they’re getting from it
Turn anecdotal feedback into actionable insights for product, marketing, and sales
Drive structured customer feedback loops (surveys, interviews, NPS)
Go-to-Market Ops
Stand up RevOps processes (reporting, funnel metrics, pipeline hygiene)
Help explore and set up indirect channels (e.g., GCP Marketplace, SI partnerships)
Execute on special projects like pricing and packaging and building a proactive customer success function
Coordinate across Sales, Marketing, and Product to unblock growth where possible
Recruiting & Team Ops
Partner with hiring managers to run efficient recruiting processes end to end
Coordinate onboarding, off-sites, and team culture rituals (including birthdays & travel gifts 😄)
Remain close to all functions and make sure everyone’s heading in the same direction
Internal Ops & Vendor Management
Own contract & NDA review for vendors and tools
Handle one-off ops tasks that would otherwise fall on the founders
You’re a high-output generalist with 2–4 years of experience in consulting, banking, VC, or early-stage startups
You’ve been a founder or want to be one someday
You’re known for getting things done, even in messy or ambiguous situations
You’re analytical and can structure fuzzy problems into solvable ones
You’re a strong communicator, both written and verbal
You’re energized by context switching and aren’t afraid to dive into something unfamiliar
[Bonus] You’ve worked at or with developer-focused or AI/infra companies
[Bonus] You’re familiar with basic financial modeling, CRM tooling, or marketing funnels
We’re laser focused on helping companies bring AI into production and providing real value. Decision making is simple: if what we do allows more users to bring AI to production, then we do it!
Don’t just cut corners – cut the right corners. What can you do with 10% of your time to get 90% of the desired impact? Now that you only spent 10% of the time doing something, imagine how much more can be done with the rest of your time!
Everyone is a 1000x team member when they’re passionate about the problems they’re solving and love the people they’re working with
Because we trust each other, we can move fast and have fun doing it 😄
