Director of Utility Business Development

Our Mission

SPAN is enabling electrification for all ⚡

We are a mission-driven company designing, building, and deploying products that electrify the built environment, reduce carbon emissions, and slow the effects of climate change.

  • Decarbonization is the process to reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions, especially carbon dioxide, from entering our atmosphere.

  • Electrification is the process of replacing fossil fuel appliances that run on gas or oil with all-electric upgrades for a cleaner way to power our lives.

At SPAN, we believe in:

  • Enabling homes and vehicles powered by clean energy

  • Making electrification upgrades possible

  • Building more resilient homes with reliable backup

  • Designing a flexible and distributed electrical grid

The Role

The Director of Utility Business Development will be responsible for growing SPAN’s business through originating and developing scaled SPAN programs through utility partnerships. As part of a quickly growing team, this person will work with a variety of stakeholders including utilities, program implementers, energy service providers, and other key trade allies to raise awareness of SPAN’s product capabilities and the unique role they play in enabling the next generation of grid edge intelligence. This role will also work closely with the internal SPAN team to steer product priorities needed to deploy these programs at scale and maximize our impact.

Responsibilities

Revenue & Growth

  • Drive revenue growth by developing utility partnerships and programs that create clear commercial value.

  • Own deal execution from proposal through negotiation, contract signing, and delivery.

  • Build scalable models for utility engagement, both directly and through channel partners, that expand adoption of smart electrical panels and associated services.

Strategy & Thought Leadership

  • Develop and execute strategies to expand utility adoption and monetize grid services.

  • Represent the company in regulatory, policy, and industry forums, positioning us as a leader in electrification and grid modernization.

  • Identify market trends, rate structures, and incentives that can unlock commercial opportunities.

Partnership Development

  • Propose, design, and launch utility pilots and programs (e.g. electrification rebates, load flexibility initiatives, non-wires alternatives).

  • Build long-term strategic partnerships with utilities, municipalities, and program implementers.

  • Negotiate agreements that balance customer, utility, and company goals.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Sales, Product, Marketing, and Operations to build and deliver successful utility offerings.

  • Translate utility and regulatory needs into product requirements, pricing models, and service offerings.

  • Support internal forecasting, pipeline management, and revenue planning.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop trusted relationships with utility executives, regulators, program implementers, and industry leaders.

  • Maintain regular touchpoints to ensure program success and customer satisfaction.

  • Manage or provide oversight for consultants supporting policy and utility engagement.

About You

Required Qualifications

Most importantly, you’re excited to jump into a complex and thorny problem space, committed to driving solutions for a cleaner, more intelligent, more distributed electric grid. You’re eager to partner with utilities and other stakeholders to explore innovative new models to electrify the residential sector without needing to rebuild existing grid infrastructure for higher load peaks.

  • 10+ years of work experience, including partnerships or sales with utilities or energy service providers, or other policy/market development work in the utility/energy space.

  • Deep understanding of utility operations, regulatory environments, and DER integration.

  • Strong communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels, as well as to synthesize complex and nuanced ideas.

  • Entrepreneurial mindset—comfortable in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

  • Passion for decarbonization, electrification, and grid modernization.

  • Adept at collaborating cross functionally with a track record of execution on complex .partnerships and new products, programs and services.

  • Experience negotiating and managing contracts.

  • The ability to travel for work trips when in-person presence is important.
