The Oregon Department of Corrections has an exciting opportunity for a Corrections Recreation Specialist at the Santiam Correctional Institution in Salem, Oregon. This position is 5 day/8hr shift work week, Monday through Friday. The standard working hours are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, although these hours are flexibles as candidates will be required to work several evenings and weekends for special events, which may occur multiple times per month.
This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide oversight, coordination, development, and maintenance of Adult in Custody (AIC) activities at Santiam Correctional Institution (SCI). This includes a wide range of programs such as enhanced visitation events, large-scale activities, tournaments, competitions, small group classes, individual skill-building sessions, and other recreational initiatives.
The position serves as the facility’s liaison for AIC activity clubs and special interest groups, ensuring safe and productive environments through education, hazard mitigation, and the establishment of clear activity parameters. It also collaborates with Central Trust and the SCI management team to ensure that all expenditures and club-related purchases comply with applicable Department of Corrections policies and criteria. This role is carried out independently, with the incumbent managing day-to-day responsibilities and assignments with minimal supervision.

This position is located at Santiam Correctional Institution (SCI) in Salem, Oregon. The institution spans approximately 80 acres and includes a substantial amount of building space. As a result, employees may be required to walk long distances throughout the facility to reach workstations or perform job duties.
The position involves outdoor work and may include exposure to inclement weather. Regular duties include monitoring physical activities and conducting site inspections of areas used for Adult in Custody (AIC) programs, including sporting and weight equipment. Employees are expected to use a computer and electronic systems regularly to perform assigned duties.
The work environment includes the potential for exposure to physical or verbal abuse and assault. The position may require overtime during emergency situations and includes an inherent responsibility to assist through recall or reassignment during AIC unrest or other institutional emergencies.

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range to reflect an additional 6.95%.
