The Division of Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, including street-related energy policies and supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, bus lanes and busways, electric vehicle charging, freight mobility and markings, and ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists. Transit Development (TD) is responsible for developing public transit-supportive street infrastructure and policies to improve mobility for all New Yorkers. The unit manages the Better Buses initiative and transit policy initiatives and develops location-specific projects to help the quality and safety of bus operations, and to improve pedestrian access to transit. TD also serves as a resource to the agency on public transit related matters, including acting as one of the key points of contact with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
TPM seeks to hire a Community Coordinator to serve the TD unit and report to the Transit Policy Advisor. A key component of the coordinator’s responsibilities will include assisting with the analysis and preparation of a long-term study identifying opportunities for bus improvements at identified high-frequency, high-ridership bus hubs around NYC. The coordinator may contribute to the identification of projects to improve bus service born out of the study and work with other staff to initiate implementation of recommendations as in-house and/or capital projects using NYC DOT’s toolkit including bus lanes and busways, bus queue jumps, and pedestrian safety improvements in addition to identified general congestion mitigation strategies. They may conduct outreach with the general public, work with community boards and other public stakeholders in public workshops, presentations, and other settings. The selected candidate will work collaboratively within the TD unit, closely with other DOT staff, and with other City, Regional, State, and Federal agencies. Study work will require close coordination with MTA. This position may manage consultant work efforts and contracts, as well as capital grants; create GIS maps and perform other technical planning analysis. Preferred Skills
The ideal candidate should have experience performing quantitative analysis preferably with public transit data, strong written and verbal skills, including delivering presentations; should have experience with geographic data collection and analysis, particularly in the ArcGIS suite; should be familiar with transit-oriented street design; and should exhibit a capacity for problem-solving. Experience with CAD and/or graphic design software is desirable. Experience with traffic analysis is desirable.
