The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) is an organization dedicated to building and stewarding a global community of people who are thinking carefully about the world's most pressing problems and taking action to solve them. Our strategic priorities include growing the effective altruism community, improving the EA brand, and diversifying EA funding sources.
We’re building out our recruiting function to professionalize our hiring and build the capacity to attract exceptional talent to CEA and the EA movement as a whole. Currently a two-person team, we're building systems and processes to help CEA hire efficiently while maintaining high standards. Reporting to the Recruiting Manager, Kale Ridsdale, you'll work alongside another recruiter, Rika Gabriel, to run hiring rounds across the organization and continuously improve our recruiting operations.
We're looking for a recruiter to own full-cycle hiring rounds from start to finish, working alongside hiring managers each step of the way. You'll manage everything from writing job descriptions and sourcing candidates to conducting interviews and facilitating offers. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys building relationships with candidates, and wants to contribute to hiring decisions that shape CEA's ability to accomplish our ambitious goals. We currently don’t have the recruiting capacity to hire for all the roles we have in our budget; this role will counterfactually increase our pace of hiring, and thus our ability to grow and support the EA community.
Your primary responsibility will be partnering with hiring managers to fill critical roles on the team. This includes:
Understanding hiring manager needs, calibrating with them throughout the process
Writing compelling job descriptions and launching open roles
Sourcing and attracting candidates through proactive outreach and network building
Screening applications and conducting initial interviews
Developing work tests and grading rubrics in collaboration with hiring managers
Coordinating interview schedules between candidates and hiring teams
Conducting reference checks
Managing offer processes
Maintaining high standards and an excellent candidate experience throughout, ensuring communications reflect CEA's values
Serving as a resource for hiring managers on recruiting best practices
You will also be expected to spend some of your time improving our hiring infrastructure. This may include:
Contributing to process improvement projects. This will start with clearly-scoped projects. Over time, your role may expand to include ownership over a particular area of recruiting operations (e.g., employer brand, sourcing, etc).
Identifying and flagging opportunities to improve recruiting processes
Tracking and maintaining candidate pipeline data
You might be a good fit for this role if you:
Are organized and detail-oriented: you can manage multiple workstreams simultaneously without dropping balls, and you know how to prioritize when things get busy.
Build relationships easily: you're comfortable reaching out to potential candidates, getting people excited about new opportunities, and maintaining professional connections over time.
Communicate clearly and reliably: your written communication is clear and compelling. You take communication seriously, and you can be relied upon to steward the experience of both candidates and hiring managers throughout the process.
Make sound judgments under pressure: you're comfortable making trade-offs and decisions when timelines are tight and information is incomplete.
Enjoy managing projects end-to-end: you're energized by the prospect of taking ownership of a hiring round from start to finish—almost like a consultant embedded with each team you work with—before moving on to partner with a new team on their next hiring need.
Have recruiting experience: while not a strict requirement, we would also be excited to consider candidates who have previous recruiting experience, whether as a dedicated recruiter or as part of another role.
Are motivated by principles-first EA: you're familiar with effective altruism ideas and excited about helping CEA find the people who will contribute to our mission.
Are willing to travel: You’ll travel to various conferences and team retreats; about 4-6 times per year internationally.
This is a full-time, remote position. We prefer applicants who are able to work in time zones between US Pacific Time and CET.
Start date: We'd ideally have you start as soon as possible, but we can be flexible on timeline.
Compensation:
US: total compensation package of $87,404, comprising a base salary of $79,458 and a 10% unconditional 401k contribution.
UK (and other non-US countries): total compensation package of £52,026, comprising a base salary of £47,296 and a 10% pension contribution.
Other locations: For candidates outside the US and UK, we base compensation on our UK salary structure and adjust for the cost of employment and fixed local benefit costs to create an equivalent package.
Benefits include private insurance, flexible work hours, a $6,000 / £5,000 annual professional development allowance, a $6,000 / £5,000 mental health support allowance, extended parental leave, ergonomic equipment, 25 days of paid vacation, and more.
We are committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and encourage individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply. We especially encourage applications from self-identified women and people of colour who are excited about contributing to our mission. The Centre for Effective Altruism is an equal opportunity employer. If you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, or have any other questions about applying, please contact [email protected].
We are committed to protecting your data. See our privacy policy for more information.
We expect the interview process to include the following steps, subject to minor changes:
Application
Work test 1
Short interview
Work test 2
Final interviews (3-4)
We are reviewing applications on a rolling basis, so it's better to apply sooner than later!
