Account Manager 1

Job Summary: 

The Account Manager 1 has experience in business development and/or customer relationship management.  Primary responsibilities are to meet assigned energy efficiency or key performance targets by proactively engaging and managing relationships with commercial, institutional, and residential customers and partners. Account Managers work closely with peers to develop long-term strategic goals for the department that advance the District of Columbia Sustainable Energy Utility’s (DCSEU’s) mission and bring the voice of the customer into the decision-making process. This position also works cross-functionally in both internal and external-facing roles in a primarily supportive role to program staff and customers. This role is tasked with supporting customers and partners to manage energy use in a way that benefits the environment, stimulates the economy and lowers energy costs for District businesses.

This is hybrid position, and the ideal candidate will be located in: Washington DC.


Essential Functions:
  • Achieves energy savings, service, and partnership goals as measured against department and team metrics. 
  • Develops strategic relationships and becomes a trusted and valued resource for customers, communities and partner organizations. 
  • Identifies opportunities within customer and prospective customer base and collaborates with Engineering Consultants and other VEIC and sub-contractor staff to ensure timely project completion. 
  • Begins to develop subject matter expertise in one or more energy-efficient technologies or customer/partner segments. 
  • Implements initiatives that respond to specific customer or partner needs.  
  • Serves as the voice of the customer by collaborating with internal colleagues to ensure products and services offered by DCSEU address market needs. 
  • Extensive collaboration with internal colleagues including Engineering Consultants, Customer Support, and Program Managers. 
  • Seeks to understand the economic and business dynamics of customers and partners and collaborates with peers and managers to advance broader organizational goals. 
  • Participates in DCSEU outreach events as necessary. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 


Knowledge and Experience:
  • Strong personal commitment to the mission, vision, goals and values of VEIC. 
  • Associate’s degree and one to three years’ experience in a business to business or professional services field or a combination of education and experience in a related field that demonstrates comparable knowledge and skills.   
  • Displays strong interpersonal skill, irrespective of industry.  Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism. 
  • Uses tools provided to effectively keep projects/relationships on track toward productive ends. Ability to handle competing priorities and proven ability to be organized, detail-oriented and accurate.  Proficiency with contact management, word processing, spreadsheet and database software. 
  • Familiarity with the features and benefits of energy efficiency technologies and the ability to perform technical analysis; some knowledge of commercial/industrial building systems a plus. 
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the economic and business dynamics of assigned accounts/relationships.  Conversant in business finance options and capable of clearly articulating the options and/or willingness to quickly learn similar customer/partner-centric motivations. 
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain client commitment and bring projects to closure.  Responsible for the complete ongoing satisfaction of all assigned accounts/relationships. 
  • A valid driver’s license and compliance with the Motor Vehicle Safety guidelines outlined in VEIC’s personnel policies.   
  • District residents are preferred for all DCSEU positions. 
  • All positions at VEIC are subject to criminal background checks. This screening is conducted in compliance with applicable laws and is a standard part of our hiring process to ensure the safety and security of our employees, clients, and contractual obligations. 


Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
  • This position primarily involves desk-based work with extensive collaboration and communication responsibilities. Physical requirements include:  
  • Ability to remain stationary at a workstation for extended periods (typically 6-8 hours per day with regular breaks)  
  • Regular use of computer, keyboard, mouse, and telephone/headset requiring fine motor skills and repetitive hand/wrist movements  
  • Visual acuity to view digital screens, documents, and presentations for prolonged periods  
  • Verbal communication abilities are sufficient for clear articulation during in-person and virtual meetings, presentations, and discussions  
  • Auditory capabilities to participate effectively in conversations, conference calls, and virtual collaboration sessions  
  • Cognitive focus for simultaneous management of multiple communication streams, projects, and stakeholder relationships  
  • Occasional movement between meeting spaces, collaboration areas, and individual workstations  
  • Minimal lifting requirements (typically under 15 pounds) for office supplies, equipment, or materials

Additional Requirements for Roles Involving Travel and / or Site Visits:
  • A valid driver’s license and compliance with the Motor Vehicle Safety guidelines outlined in VEIC’s personnel policies.    
  • Ability to travel independently to various locations (up to 25-30% of work time), which may include driving, flying, or using public transportation   
  • Physical mobility to navigate various building environments including commercial facilities, construction sites, mechanical rooms, and/or residential properties   
  • Capability to climb stairs, stand for extended periods during site visits (1-3 hours), and occasionally access confined spaces or use ladders   
  • Tolerance for varying environmental conditions including temperature fluctuations, construction noise, and outdoor weather during site assessments   
  • Ability to safely lift and carry equipment, tools, or materials weighing up to 40 pounds   
  • Manual dexterity to operate testing equipment, measurement devices, or other field tools as required 


Travel Requirements:
  • Occasional to Moderate Travel  
  • This position involves occasional to moderate travel (approximately 5–30% of work time, or 2–7 days per month). Travel may include regional site visits, partner meetings, or VEIC gatherings. A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel independently within the service region are required. Overnight stays may occasionally be necessary.

$28.25 - $30.50 an hour
At VEIC, we are committed to pay transparency. Based on market data, pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and location. The total compensation package for this position also includes a full range of medical benefits, 403(b) eligibility with match, Combined Time Off (CTO), Care and Concern leave, Parental leave, wellbeing benefit, a community service day, and eight paid holidays that are effective as of your first day of employment.
