Mechanical Engineer, Tower & Launch Mount (Starship)

SpaceX is developing technologies to enable human life on Mars. The Mechanical Engineer for Tower & Launch Mount (Starship) will design, iterate, and support manufacture, assembly, and testing of primary and secondary structures, tooling, and processes for the Starship launch mount and catch tower. This role partners closely with design, production, quality, and vendors and will often act as an on-site engineering lead advising technicians and skilled labor.

Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, aerospace, or related engineering
  • Hands-on mechanical systems experience (internship/project counts)
  • Proficiency in CAD (Unigraphics NX preferred) and PLM systems (Teamcenter)
  • Knowledge of GD&T and design-for-manufacturability principles
  • Experience with welding processes and large steel structure construction
  • Familiarity with FEA/finite element analysis and fluid/thermal modeling
  • Experience designing or operating pressurized systems (cryogenic, hydraulic, gases)
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and on-site leadership skills
  • Ability to work at heights, in tight spaces, and in variable outdoor conditions
  • ITAR eligibility / ability to pass required background checks

Responsibilities

  • Design-for-manufacturability and create CAD models and prints for flight and tooling components
  • Develop production procedures and manage transition from development to production
  • Coordinate and execute development, qualification, and acceptance testing of systems and tooling
  • Design tooling, fixtures, assembly aids, and welding processes for large structure builds
  • Act as on-site engineering lead to support build sequencing, integration, and installation
  • Create and maintain build schedules and document processes for continual improvement
  • Resolve manufacturing discrepancies and interface with quality for corrective actions
  • Participate in internal and supplier design reviews and provide technical vendor support
  • Source and advise vendors; supervise and advise production technicians and skilled labor

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or related engineering discipline (required)
  • Advanced degree in a relevant engineering field (preferred)
