- Practical corrosion evaluation and mitigation experience
- Strong understanding of corrosion mechanisms and surface chemistry
- Experience with coatings, paints, sealants, and corrosion inhibitors
- Hands-on laboratory experience with FTIR, SEM, optical microscopy, and related instruments
- Ability to design and execute accelerated exposure and reliability tests
- Technical documentation and regulatory compliance (ASTM, NACE, NASA, OSHA) experience
- Field inspection and contamination evaluation experience; willing to travel and work extended hours
Responsibilities
- Define, qualify, and implement corrosion mitigation schemes across flight hardware and ground support equipment
- Investigate and analyze corrosive conditions on the vehicle fleet and ground systems; perform root-cause analysis
- Design and execute accelerated exposure test campaigns to evaluate corrosion preventative materials and processes
- Develop and qualify novel materials, coatings, sealants, and repair methods to improve reliability and reusability
- Maintain documentation and perform work to meet SpaceX and external specifications (NASA, ASTM, NACE, OSHA, ASME)
- Train and support inspector and technician teams on corrosion inspections, etching methods, and contamination evaluation
- Provide field support at launch and recovery sites (travel up to 50%) and work extended hours as required
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in materials engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, or chemistry (required)
- Master’s degree in corrosion engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, or chemistry (preferred)
- Familiarity with professional standards (NACE/AMPP, ASTM) and personnel qualification programs (preferred)
