Launch and Test Engineer, Mechanical

SpaceX is developing technologies to enable human life on Mars and operates an aggressive, fast-paced launch and test environment. The Launch and Test Engineer, Mechanical will design, build, activate, and iterate mechanical systems that support rocket static fires and launches, taking projects from concept through field support and rapid troubleshooting.

Skills

  • Mechanical and fluids system design and troubleshooting
  • Structural analysis and familiarity with failure modes and weldments
  • Experience with pressurized and cryogenic fluid systems
  • Proficiency with CAD (NX preferred) and FEA tools (ANSYS, FEMAP, or similar)
  • Ability to perform hand calculations to verify designs
  • Hands-on fabrication knowledge (machining, welding) and drawing production for shop fabrication
  • Strong communication, initiative, and ability to work under high urgency

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, design, and build mechanical systems that support critical rocket launches and test operations
  • Own projects cradle-to-grave: lead design reviews, justify decisions, procure equipment, and coordinate installation
  • Design modular hardware for manufacturability and repeatable deployment across future launch sites
  • Perform structural, pressurized fluid, and thermal analyses and optimize for cost and schedule
  • Use FEM tools and hand calculations to validate designs and disposition issues
  • Collaborate with vehicle engineers to translate vehicle requirements into ground/test systems
  • Work directly with technicians to build designs and rapidly resolve field issues
  • Activate and troubleshoot equipment during testing; iterate to reduce downtime
  • Maintain feedback loop with launch operations to rapidly adjust plans to meet mission timelines
  • Provide hands-on field support including installation, maintenance, and emergency response

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related engineering field

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and performance-driven environment
  • Opportunities for rapid responsibility growth and cross-discipline exposure
  • Hands-on work with cutting-edge aerospace systems and test programs
  • Professional development through challenging, high-visibility projects
  • Standard employee benefits (medical, dental, retirement plan) and paid time off
