The Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC) is currently seeking a Communications Coordinator to join its Public Affairs Division. This position is based at ODOC Headquarters in Salem, Oregon, and is approved for a hybrid work schedule. Frequent travel to Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville, Oregon, and potentially to other institutions is required. This is a limited duration assignment expected to last approximately 24 months.
This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
The primary purpose of this position is to lead and support project management efforts related to the implementation of the Gender Informed Practices Assessment (GIPA) across the agency. This role ensures timely, consistent, and strategic messaging; coordinates cross-divisional collaboration; and supports the successful execution of GIPA-related initiatives through internal communication, content development, and tracking of implementation milestones.

This position is based at ODOC Headquarters in Salem, Oregon, and is approved for a hybrid work schedule. Frequent travel to Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville, Oregon, and potentially to other institutions is required. The work environment involves frequent interruptions, distractions, and competing priorities, requiring the ability to stay organized and focused. The position requires the individual to be a positive, dependable, and collaborative team member.
The position may involve interactions with hostile or distressed individuals seeking information or assistance and includes occasional entry into secure areas of correctional facilities, which may involve exposure to adult felony offenders. The Communications Coordinator represents the Department of Corrections and may act on behalf of the Assistant Director of Communications when sharing or gathering information, or when managing special projects or assignments. Due to the nature of the work, the position frequently handles sensitive and confidential issues that require a high degree of tact, discretion, and professionalism.
The Oregon Department of Corrections is responsible for over 12,000 adults in custody in 12 state prisons throughout Oregon. It advises and evaluates counties regarding administration of probation and parole programs supervising more than 24,000 offenders in Oregon communities. The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range to reflect an additional 6.95%.
