Community Engagement Strategist, Edutopia

About the George Lucas Educational Foundation
Founded by filmmaker George Lucas in 1991, the George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming pre-K-12 education so all students can thrive in their studies, careers, and adult lives. As a part of GLEF, Edutopia is a solutions-based media organization finding and telling the stories of what works in prek-12 schools across the world–its website, newsletters, and social media channels reach millions of educators every month, highlighting research-backed strategies and real-world examples they can use immediately. We've built a vibrant, positive, highly engaged community of educators committed to improving learning outcomes for all students.

Our mission-driven team values collaboration, continuous improvement, and transformative storytelling. As a fully remote organization, we foster an inclusive environment where innovation thrives and every team member is empowered to drive meaningful educational change.

The Opportunity

Edutopia, part of the George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF), has carved out a distinctive reputation in the education media landscape through a community-first mindset and strong cross-team collaboration between our editorial, marketing and community, and product teams. We’re now seeking a Community Engagement Strategist to join us in the next chapter of this journey.

This is a groundbreaking new role at the intersection of community engagement, editorial storytelling, and digital innovation. You'll identify and use cutting-edge tools (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Sora, Canva Magic Studio, Diffit, etc.) and emerging distribution channels (internal message boards, new social platforms, virtual events, outbound notifications) to curate and create engaging content and experiences with and for educators. Working closely with our editorial, community, and design teams, you’ll develop stories and content extensions like quizzes, downloadable charts, provocative questions, and usable classroom materials by “listening in” as educators write, converse, and engage on Edutopia’s website and social channels. You’ll be obsessive about our audience’s engagement with the content you develop, using data and user feedback to ensure that everything we produce is compelling, useful, meets our editorial standards, and aligns with our broader mission.

You may be a great fit if a lot of this list is true about you:

  • You've launched initiatives that blend community building with content marketing—testing fresh approaches to grow engaged audiences, experimenting with emerging platforms, and actively iterating based on what resonates with your community (bonus points if you did this in the education space).
  • You’re a natural communicator and relentlessly curious to get to know people and help them share their ideas to the benefit of others.
  • You have a strong instinct for compelling story and content angles and can execute on that vision; maybe you’ve been a blogger or have cultivated a following on Instagram, create videos in your free time, and love tinkering with the latest digital media formats and tools out there.
  • You are energized by working with new technologies and translating complex ideas into useful and usable materials.
  • You are highly creative, write well, and are good at rallying your colleagues to design and implement new initiatives that don’t have an established roadmap to follow.
  • You are ready to contribute bold, strategically aligned ideas to the broader team’s overall strategy.
  • You have classroom experience (i.e., you were a teacher) or a background in K-12 education and can successfully demonstrate your abilities in digital content creation and/or organizing events or other gatherings for educators.

Content strategy & co-creation:

  • Partner closely with educators and our internal team of journalists to identify, vet, and produce practical implementation supports—guides, how-to videos, workshops, and more—that extend and enhance our existing content.
  • Identify and leverage AI tools to translate our rich content archive into fresh, useful resources, like interactive quizzes, downloadable charts, educator rubrics, video clips, posters, or discussion prompts that add real value for educators.
  • Source and highlight educator-created content (UGC) and pilot creative new approaches to amplify their work, including launching and managing a “UGC Creator Corps” (a vetted cohort of educators who regularly contribute videos, articles, classroom materials, etc.)
  • Develop and maintain a community content and conversation calendar to ensure our contributors and audiences are part of an ongoing dialogue, with our staff and one another, around our content.

Community engagement & cultivation:

  • Shape and co-lead our emerging Community Engagement Program to deepen and expand contribution opportunities for educators; this is much deeper than a typical ambassador effort and focuses on driving meaningful ways for educators to participate directly in our mission (not just talk about it).
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with educators across the field to attract new voices to our organization and keep a pulse on emerging areas of interest and need.
  • Curate resources created by educators in our community; champion teachers whose teaching assets and tools can benefit educators across discipline or level.
  • Facilitate and/or host online discussions and virtual and IRL events that foster respectful, meaningful dialogue and generate actionable insights for the broader community.
  • Leverage engagement data and qualitative feedback methods to consistently learn, iterate, and improve our approach.
  • A bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years of experience (or master’s degree and 1 - 2 years of experience) working in the field of K-12 education, either as a teacher or in another capacity that required classroom knowledge;
  • Demonstrated ability to create a compelling, well-designed digital presence, either via social media, blog or video platforms, podcasts, or other (surprise us!);
  • Strong writing, organization, and project management skills with the ability to work in a deadline-driven environment;
  • Advanced collaboration and communication skills; a “people person” with a bias for outreach and action;
  • Experience working with emerging technologies and new media, particularly new tools powered by artificial intelligence;
  • Familiarity with digital metrics/KPIs;
  • Highly flexible, adaptive, can-do thinker who proactively solves problems and thrives in uncharted territory.
