The VALLE team aims to create community level change and improve quality of life by building capacity in civic engagement, leadership, and advocacy among Central Valley residents. The VALLE team is looking for one (1) student intern eager to make a positive impact in their community. The role of the student intern will be to provide support in data collection,
community outreach, media communications, and health education to prevent exposure and use of tobacco among youth and targeted populations in Fresno County (City of Fresno and surrounding community(ies) in Fresno County – but can vary). This will be done under the guidance of ACS CAN VALLE staff via a variety of advocacy strategies and data collection activities.
Internship Activities:
Some of the activities may include but are not limited to the following*
*Note: these activities will be conducted in partnership and with support from ACS CAN -VALLE staff and may be conducted virtual or in-person (can vary).
1. Data collection:
o Administer public opinion surveys among community residents and conduct other data collection activities as needed; intern will receive data collection training(s).
o Track and report on relevant news, media narratives and policies impacting tobacco and secondhand smoke.
2. Community outreach, education & media communication:
o Participate in community events and activities to provide educational material and tobacco cessation resources.
o Assist in gathering data and updating research community presentations.
o Contribute to the development of educational materials including social media content.
o Maintain a calendar of social media and digital media activities that drive community engagement, including supporting the development of quarterly newsletters.
3. Community advocacy:
o Participate in local tobacco prevention coalition, as applicable.
o Assist in collecting community petitions and advocacy stories.
The following requirements must be met:
• Be at least a second-year college student at any local community college and/or university in the Central Valley.
• Be enrolled in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters and have an interest in the public health field (preferred major).
• Commit to the internship for both the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters (1 academic year).
• Set aside 6 hours a week to engage in internship activities for 28 weeks (14 weeks per semester).
The hourly rate is $16.75. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
