Hours: Up to 20-hours/week during the semester. Up to 40-hours/week during breaks and summer. Will work around class schedule.
Position Summary
Great opportunity for anyone interested in network hardware, wireless hardware, and electronics. We will train. The primary focus of this position is to assist permanent staff in maintaining UWSP’s network and telephone environment. Tasks include wiring, maintenance, installation and repair of network and telephone equipment. The ability to distinguish colors is required. Knowledge of electricity, electronics, and network hardware, such as switches and routers, is a plus, but not required.
Duties/Responsibilities
Maintenance of UWSP Switch and Voice Terminals
Replace circuit packs by opening the facelift lever of the pack and popping it out of its backplane connector.
Exchange or swap circuit packs by replacing a pack with a spare, or by changing the positions of duplicate packs within the system.
Install, move, or change voice terminals for all campus users.
System Wiring
Install/move jacks for campus users for voice/data connections to the telephone switch and the campus LAN.
Install premise wire to add additional riser cable or horizontal cable to accommodate physical plant changes, expansions, new building needs, or station wiring.
Identify different types of cable terminations using the standard color code at the cross connect field.
Install appropriate cross connects and interconnect hardware to terminate premise wire and optical fiber.
Make cross connect and jumper changes to premise wire to ensure signal continuity for voice and data.
Troubleshooting Repairs and Problems
Work with staff to resolve line or equipment problems as needed.
Respond to troubles called into the office for voice communications in a timely fashion.
Record and maintain installation and maintenance records and files.
Maintain inventory for voice terminals.
Clean telephone instruments.

Technical Skills and Abilities
· Experience in all Microsoft Office applications.
· Experience working with AutoCAD in a plus.
· Experience working with telephone and telecommunication systems is a plus.
Physical Requirements
· The ability to work in small, or confined, spaces with manual dexterity of small tools and low levels of lighting.
· A clear scientific thought process is required for troubleshooting of the telephone switch, voice mail, and network operations.
· The ability to operate basic office equipment, such as a PC and printer.
· The ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing tasks.
· The ability to perform light physical activity, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects weighing twenty-five to fifty pounds.
· The ability to use ladders and walk stairs/distances throughout the institution.
· The ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
· The ability to operate hand tools, power tools, voice/network wiring and testing instruments for voice and data. In the operation of equipment, responsible for safety, health, and sanitation codes, regulations or practices of UWSP.
