Purpose

This is a dual position serving two units within the Office of the Dean of Students. Half of the allotted work time will be dedicated to support the Terry Scholars program and the other half will be dedicated to Student Outreach and Support.

Terry Scholars Program: This portion of this role would include advising and mentoring students participating in the Terry Scholars Program at UT Austin, hosting and participating in events on and off-campus and assisting with a scholarship program which is based on leadership, service, need, and merit.

Student Outreach Support (SOS): This portion of this role would have the student contributing and providing case management, and crisis services for undergraduate and graduate students to ensure a comprehensive and holistic approach to student emergencies, critical incidents on campus, student success, and retention. The GA will address academic, financial, residential, student development, mental health, wellness, safety, and behavioral issues with students in need.

Responsibilities

Terry Program

  • Co-manage the Terry Scholars Program of about 200 students.
  • Mentor and support Terry Scholars through 1:1 check-ins; tracking consultation information.
  • Co-advise the Terry Scholars Student Association (TSSA); holding regular meetings with the executive board and offering assistance as needed.
  • Partner with University Housing and Dining staff to support the Terry Scholars Living Learning Community.
  • Attend required Terry Scholar events, meetings, and trainings.
  • Collaborate with various campus partners to facilitate events and learning opportunities for Terry Scholars.
  • Provide guidance to students experiencing crisis situations; including financial, personal, academic.
  • Marginal/Incidental functions - Other related functions as assigned.

SOS Program

  • Facilitate case management for various student emergencies including financial concerns, hospitalizations, and general mental health.
  • Provide comprehensive referral services to students for on campus and community services.
  • Assist in the support of student victims and survivors of crimes, abuse, theft, assaults or other types of safety concerns.
  • Assist with department and student outreach to enhance partnerships within the University.
  • Work 1:1 with students through walk-in appointments and incoming calls or emails.
  • Manage and update case records and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Only considering currently enrolled full-time graduate students (master’s preferred) in Social Work, Educational Leadership & Policy, Educational Psychology, Curriculum and Instruction, Communications, Business, or other related field
  • Demonstrate an understanding of crisis management, mental health, and student resources.
  • Experience working with sensitive student populations.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of discretion and uphold privacy and confidentiality of student records.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience partnering with student organizations
  • Demonstrated organizational, administrative, listening and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Experience and comfort with public speaking
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. This position requires a social security number and work authorization. Students with DACA are eligible.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Salary
$19.33 per hour

Work Shift

  • 20 hours per week
  • Flexible hours to be scheduled between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m, Monday through Friday
