General Summary
Under general supervision, manages, plans, and coordinates the operations of the clinical unit. Supervise technical, nursing and administrative personnel assigned to the clinical unit ensuring quality patient care and efficient and effective work processes and procedures in collaboration with assigned medical staff and in accordance with UMMS policies and procedures.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
Oversees daily operation of clinical unit and supervises clinical personnel who conduct routine and/or specialized cardiac and/or vascular procedures to patients through application of respective specialized modality ensuring maximum productivity and effectiveness in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
Confers with Medical Director and the Procedural Director regarding clinical unit operations and the development, implementation, review and update of written policies, procedures, and protocols to provide for optimum functioning of the clinical unit.
A. Formulates policies, procedures and protocols relating to clinical unit’s procedures, instrument and equipment maintenance and general operations. Includes safety and disaster preparedness. Updates, clinical unit operating procedure manual in conjunction with the Procedural Director.
Participates in the capital budget requests for the clinical unit. Recommends the addition or modification of clinical equipment. Ensures compliance with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies through periodic inspections and observation of practices. Takes appropriate action when violations are identified.
Supervises and coordinates the selection, installation, maintenance, quality control and training for laboratory equipment. Monitors quality control of laboratory operations, supplies and equipment; audits validity and accuracy of procedures performed by staff, in collaboration with the Medical Director of the clinical unit, and the Procedural Director.
A. Monitors highly specialized cardiovascular diagnostic and therapeutic procedures/studies, utilizes nursing procedures, sterile technique and radiographic or ultrasonic technique for diagnosis and intervention. Applies technical expertise in directing the flow of cardiac or vascular procedures.
B. Performs and/or ensures that quality assurance requirements are met. Collaborates with staff, cardiologist, vascular surgeons and imaging specialist to correct image variances.
C. Monitors instrument maintenance, quality control and proficiency testing ensuring accuracy, efficiency and documentation/reporting of same.
Responsible for complete cost center management consisting of volume and expense budgeting, supply/equipment ordering and tracking and expense tracking and reconciliation.
Coordinates communication between clinical unit personnel and medical staff to relate operational procedures, mediate differences and to resolve problems. Communicates regularly with medical staff to address any special needs of the clinical unit required for patient care.
Maintains inventory of all consumable items, and supervises weekly supply orders to ensure adequate availability of supplies and equipment. Keeps statistics on inventory usage. Meets with vendors regarding demonstrations of new equipment.
Maintains documentation of department activities, for reporting and for reimbursement purposes and for modification and improvement of department operations.
A. Processes billing for procedures performed by physicians. Reviews hospital and professional billing activity reconciling actual charges. Records testing and quality control activities, daily.
B. Compiles productivity reports, including individual employee and departmental production. Records instrument and equipment management including frequency of use and preventive maintenance.
C. Prepares quarterly quality assurance and safety activity reports on equipment. Records monthly in-service education on staff.
D. Submits to management significant departmental operations data (narrative and statistical) for administrative reports, as required.
Assists in the training, teaching and evaluating of students and their performance within the rotation to the clinical unit. May assist physicians with procedures by performing responsibilities within their scope of practice as determined by their governing body and within hospital policy.
Education and Experience
Adult and Pediatric Cath/EP Lab
Radiologic Technologist RT(R): Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology. Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Licensure as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist obtained from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Advanced certification as a Cardiovascular Technologist - (CI), (CV) or (R)CIS.
Registered Nurse (RN): Graduation from an accredited college or university in Nursing. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse obtained from the State of Maryland. Bachelor’s degree in nursing is required; Master’s degree preferred (required for an RN per magnet).
EVERYONE:
Bachelor’s Degree in related field is required. Four years of related experience may substitute for the education requirement; this substituted experience would be in addition to the required experience below.
Ten years progressively responsible experience performing clinical testing and evaluation duties, or equivalent, is required. In addition, a minimum of five years supervisory experience required.
CPR certification is required.
ACLS certification is required.
