TITLE: Legal Internship – Summer 2026

LOCATION: Carmel IN, Chicago IL, or Remote from US Central or Eastern time zones

CNO’s Legal Intern program is designed to introduce law students to learn about CNO and network while doing important work for the organization.

At CNO, the legal intern will work with members of the Law Department to assist internal business partners with their strategic initiatives while managing risk in a highly regulated environment. The candidate will assist in providing legal support for the various business and shared service areas, including the consumer and worksite divisions, marketing, human resources, finance, claims, underwriting, and agent and policyholder services by researching and analyzing issues and laws, drafting legal opinions and contracts, and assisting in providing legal direction. The candidate will also participate in projects with other areas of the Law Department to provide support and guidance. Reports to the VP and Deputy General Counsel.

This is a paid internship, at competitive rates of approx. $27-$29/hour, depending on your location.  The Memorial Day and 4th of July holidays are paid days off.

As a Legal Intern, your responsibilities will include:

Gathering and analyzing facts and apply appropriate laws, regulations and legal standards to assist with providing legal counsel related to:

  • Insurance contracts
  • Marketing agreements
  • Sales and marketing materials
  • Policy interpretation, claims processes, and processing individual claims
  • Individual, Worksite and Group underwriting processes for life and health insurance policies
  • Policyholder issues
  • Attorney, consumer and regulatory inquiries and complaints
  • Risk assessment and mitigation in fraud investigations and determination
  • Employment matters

Working with and providing support to the following areas within the Law Department:

  • Compliance
  • Employment
  • Litigation
  • Privacy
  • Legal Operations
  • Government Relations

The CNO 2026 internship program will run May 18 through August 7, 2026. During this period, we offer programming that compliments the learning provided by the department through work and other activities such as

  • An in-person event at one of our Corporate offices during the summer
  • Final Presentations
  • Volunteering Event

Qualified candidates for a Legal Intern position will have:

  • Progress towards a JD degree, having completed the first year of law school
  • Availability to work 10-12 weeks during the summer
  • Persuasive written and oral communication skills
  • The ability to work within a team, and also being self-motivated and willing to work independently and take initiative
  • Summer location of Carmel, IN or Chicago area OR within the US central or eastern time zones.
