Position Duties/Summary:
The Contextualized Human-Agent System for Intelligence Activities (CHASIA) project team is seeking a postdoctoral associate starting in early September 2025 focused on supporting a Department of Defense-funded larger project. This larger project is dedicated to developing and testing AI supports in the context of collaborative judgment formation and team cognition with collaborative intelligence analysis activities. The postdoctoral researcher will be embedded within the Technical Area 1 team within the larger project (our specific project is named CHASIA). Collectively and including the postdoctoral associate, the CHASIA team is charged with bringing social science theory and empirical testing to the multidisciplinary larger project. Members of the CHASIA team currently have backgrounds in social/personality psychology, organizational behavior, applied psychology, computer science, and more. We are located at the University of Maryland (UMD) College of Information (INFO), Fraunhofer USA Mid-Atlantic, and Duquesne University. The team will use a variety of research methods (e.g., naturalistic experiments, interviews, focus groups). The postdoctoral associate will design studies (e.g., controlled human subjects experiments with a variety of types of participants, interviews with subject matter experts), collect and analyze data quantitatively and qualitatively, develop measures, and collaborate with the larger project team in figuring out how best to examine the role of AI support of intelligence activities. The postdoctoral associate will also mentor and collaborate with graduate students and undergraduates, as well as collaborate with and learn about this evolving area along with researchers across different disciplines and institutions. The postdoctoral associate will have the opportunity to advance their research agenda through formal and informal training and extensive collaboration with the researchers in INFO and across the greater project, which includes researchers at additional institutions. The postdoctoral associate is expected to interface, coordinate, and collaborate with both the CHASIA team and the larger team. In collaboration with both the CHASIA team and the larger project group the selected researcher will present and publish peer-reviewed contributions and other articles.
The postdoctoral researcher will receive support and mentoring during the project. In addition to working with this project, the researcher will participate in the intellectual life of the UMD INFO College. For instance, the postdoc will be expected to be involved with the Organizational Teams and Technology Research Society (OTTRS), which is based in UMD INFO but includes scholars from different disciplines across the DC area.
Ideal applicants will have a background in psychology (social, industrial/organizational, applied experimental), organizational behavior, communication, human-computer interaction, business technology, human factors, and/or a related field. Background in team cognition, group processes, human-AI teaming from a social science perspective, and/or computer-supported collaboration with expertise on emergent states, such as transactive memory systems, is preferred. Ideal candidates will have experience with quantitative methods, with additional expertise in or a desire to learn qualitative methods. Candidates should be comfortable working with large datasets and ideally have some familiarity with developing unobtrusive behavioral measures. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated success working on teams and be interested in working on collaboration and technology topics.
INFO is committed to building an inclusive community, and we strongly encourage scholars from underrepresented groups to apply for this position. We believe that a range of perspectives and experiences enrich our community and academia as a whole. We are committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all members of our community, and we look forward to hearing from a large pool of applicants with a wide range of experiences, interests, and expertise.
Candidates should have defended their dissertation by August 2025. The postdoctoral researcher is a full-time position available for a fixed term of one year, from early September 2025. The postdoctoral researcher will work under the guidance of Dr. Susannah Paletz at INFO and will be conducting the above-mentioned duties on-site in College Park, Maryland.
