This is an open rank (tenure-track or tenured) 9-month faculty position with reduced teaching load to direct the Mariachi program. Primary duties will include teaching an applied instrument (open/unspecified), advising students, directing the TAMIU Mariachi Internacional, providing service to the department, college and university; and participating in department, college, and university initiatives. Duties also include recruiting students and actively promoting the Mariachi program in the community and on a national level at festivals and competitions. Duties also include (1) remaining active as a scholar and/or creative artist, (2) mentoring and advising students, (3) applying for external grant funding to maintain a scholarly/research agenda, and (4) engaging in community and professional outreach that highlights and enhances the visibility of TAMIU's Mariachi program and other applied teaching areas. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.
The College of Arts & Sciences is the largest and more comprehensive college at the university. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts has thriving programs in art, dance, music, and theater.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a Doctorate in Music, specialization in an instrument (currently open/unspecified) and scholarly/creative works commensurate with the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. Two (2) years of teaching experience are also required. We strongly encourage candidates with significant experience in establishing and supporting a mariachi program with excellence in performance and artistry and have a demonstrated ability to perform and teach an applied instrument at a high professional level to apply. Candidates with successful experience in recruiting and retaining music students, particularly in mariachi ensembles, a record of community engagement and outreach through schools, festivals, or cultural organizations and an ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute to the broader music curriculum are also encouraged.
