Reporting to the Vice Dean of Penn Engineering Development and in collaboration with Penn Engineering development staff, the Assistant Director for Research, Prospect Management, and Data Analytics will be responsible for research and prospect management to help the office achieve its fundraising and engagement goals. The position will support creating portfolios and maximizing relationship management through prospect development. The Assistant Director will also help with designing and developing interactive information dashboards for the team.

The Assistant Director for Research, Prospect Management, and Data Analytics will provide research and prospect management processes to help build and maintain a sustainable and broad-based principal and major gifts pipeline for fundraisers at Penn Engineering. This position will also use statistical analysis, data modeling tools and techniques to proactively look for opportunities to innovate and positively impact philanthropic and engagement activities.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

Research and Prospect Management

  • Collaborate with fundraisers and other internal partners to research, develop, and maintain prospect pools.

  • Proactively identify prospects and research prospects identified by fundraisers.

  • Develop prospect lists based on specific fund-raising and campaign initiatives by using dashboard tools.

  • Use information provided by the available prospect management dashboards to provide the Vice Dean and Senior Director with information on outreach and development activities across the department, to inform portfolio strategy and support portfolio health.

  • Coordinate with research/prospect management colleagues to ensure adherence to prospect management guidelines and to record and track information accurately in the database.

  • Help prioritize portfolios, assist with challenging cases, assess prospect viability, and identify key information needed to move each prospect forward.

  • Participate in strategy meetings to share information and to determine what research is needed to move prospects through the stages of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

  • Take the lead on new projects and initiatives.

Data Analytics

  • Leverage analytics to support the goals of Penn Engineering Development and Alumni Relations giving programs – ranging from strategy development to the application of predictive models and metrics to increase fundraising, participation, and engagement.

  • Work with Penn Engineering development staff to understand their information and business needs and develop innovative and effective data analysis solutions.

  • Use database query, export, and reporting tools to extract, manipulate, analyze, visualize and report data, trends and patterns. Use data and analytics to assess existing programs and segments and make recommendations for improvement.

  • Provide thoughts and ideas to help create specific donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies that are informed by data and industry best practices.

  • Create visually appealing and easy-to-read reports that drive strategy within the division and inform leadership and partners of results.

  • Work closely with the Compass (Salesforce NPSP), APA/Reports, Records and Gifts Accounting and Administration staff to ensure accuracy in the data.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree and 3-5 years of experience in fundraising, marketing, public relations or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in higher education preferred. Must be detail-oriented, highly motivated, and able to multi-task with changing priorities and meet task deadlines. Must possess the ability to work effectively and positively in a team environment, with a mix of colleagues and members of the broader Penn community. Must have excellent organizational skills and be able to handle multiple priorities with ease in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated flexibility as tasks and priorities may change based on weekly and monthly tracking meetings as well as last-minute requests. Ability to quickly provide progress reports in order to contribute to data-driven decision making. Display enthusiasm to take the lead on new projects and initiatives; some that may fall outside the scope of the job description. Ideally understands fundraising principles, demonstrates creativity and innovation, and desires to meet deadlines in a timely manner.

Proficiency and demonstrated expert usage of Microsoft Office Suite including: MS WORD, EXCEL, Access; SQL, and data visualization tools such as Qlikview and Tableau. Useful additional technologies include R, and Salesforce. Database and technology knowledge with the ability to learn quickly and then implement learnings to increase efficiency and effectiveness.

Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends to staff university and departmental events.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, and in alignment with salary ranges based on external market data for the job’s level. Internal organization and peer data at Penn are also considered.
