Job Description

Plan and provide professional nursing services and patient care for students, staff, and faculty. Ensure compliance with clinicians’ orders and follow established nursing processes, including patient assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

This position reports to the Director of Occupational Health and is under the daily supervision of the Clinical Operations Manager. The Occupational Health Staff Nurse is responsible for delivering comprehensive professional nursing services to faculty, staff, and student employees. In this role, the Occupational Health Staff Nurse supports the University's Occupational Health Program (OHP) by assessing, treating, and managing both work-related and non-work-related illnesses and injuries. Responsibilities include conducting health screenings, promoting wellness initiatives, and ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety regulations. The Occupational Health Nurse collaborates closely with university management, safety personnel, human resources, and external healthcare providers to foster a safe and healthy work environment, minimize absenteeism, and advance a culture of health and well-being across the campus community. This position also provides assistance and coverage in other clinical areas of Occupational Health Services (OHS) as needed.

  • Provides nursing assessments and care following Registered Nurse (RN) scope of practice, OHP standing delegation orders, and established procedures. 
  • Performs routine clinical skills, including but not limited to vital signs, medication administration, physical assessments, audiograms, immunizations, tuberculosis (TB) screenings, etc. 
  • Maintains accurate documentation in an Occupational Medicine Information System (OMIS) in accordance with regulatory requirements and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Performs assessments of work-related injuries to evaluate the nature and extent of the condition and provide first aid treatment.
  • Evaluates employees enrolled in work-related medical surveillance programs, including but not limited to Bloodborne Pathogens, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Protection, and Lab Animal Allergy. Provides annual surveillance for faculty, staff, and student employees enrolled in these programs.
  • Demonstrate an exceptional ability to listen without bias, think critically to discern the key salient points.
  • Responsible for telephone triage and employee education.
  • Review medical record for pertinent previous and current medical information. 
  • Interview employees for assessment of current problems, medications, and allergies.
  • Administer medications according to policy and procedure. 
  • Perform nursing procedures in accordance with the clinician’s orders, including phlebotomy and vaccine administration.

Working Conditions:

  • Potential exposure to biohazards. May be required to wear uniforms and/or personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • May be required to work outside of regular hours in emergency situations.
  • Schedule Monday-Friday, 7:30am-3:30pm

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion
  • Ability to stand for extended periods

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Graduate of accredited nursing program
  • Minimum of 1-year relevant work experience in Occupational Health

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Additional certification as a Certified Occupational Health Nurse–Specialist (COHN-S) or in case management (COHN-S/CM or CM) is highly preferred.
  • Experience in an academic or industry research-related occupational health setting is highly desirable but not required. 
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and client service skills.
  • Willingness to adjust work schedule and responsibilities to accommodate the needs of the university.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, intermediate Excel skills.
  • Ability to organize tasks, problem solve, and respond in times of multiple demands and urgent situations.
  • Knowledgeable of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.  

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Current and valid Massachusetts RN License 
  • Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOCH) certification (preferred) 
  • National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Spirometry Certification (preferred)

  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 40 hours per week
    • Schedule Monday-Friday, 7:30am-3:30pm

This position is based on-site at a Harvard campus location. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
