Traffic Control & Engineering is responsible for administration, engineering and operations related to the installation, manufacturing, maintenance and removal of signs, flexible bollards, moveable barriers, in-house traffic sign production and other traffic control devices. The office draws on the expertise and talents of engineers, sign designers, planners, inspectors, IT experts, analysts and others to help the agency achieve Vision Zero and other city goals.
Traffic Control & Engineering is seeking an experienced and highly capable Transportation Specialist II to serve as the Deputy Director of Street Name Signs (DDSNS). Under the direction of the Director of Street Name Signs, the DDSNS will assist in overseeing a $10M contract for the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of approximately 45,000 street name signs citywide. The DDSNS will supervise a staff of supporting personnel, ensuring work meets contractual, operational, and quality standards. Duties include assisting with contractor coordination on billing, work orders, performance monitoring, and evaluations; reviewing and recommending approval of invoices; verifying compliance with contractual terms; and providing technical expertise to contractors and subcontractors. The DDSNS will support the preparation of change orders and time extensions, review contract documents, and assist in developing engineering estimates. Additional responsibilities include helping prepare performance summaries for senior management, assigning and reviewing inspectors’ daily work, managing orders in SIMS, coordinating with IT on system improvements, and overseeing order creation, approval, and tracking. The DDSNS will also assist with data analysis, vendor payment processing, expense tracking in FMS, audit preparation, and responses to street name sign requests via 311 and ARTS, as well as performing related duties as assigned by the Director, Assistant Commissioner, Executive Director, or Deputy Executive Director.

1. A master's degree in transportation engineering, mathematics, urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, or related physical and social science fields; or
2. A baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college and one year of full-time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area-wide traffic programs; or
3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or
4. An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or
5. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above.
