About the Role: 

The Director, Commercial Credit Review, will lead the Commercial Credit Review function within the third line of defense at American Express – reporting to the Vice President of Commercial Credit Review. This leader will be responsible for delivering end-to-end credit review activities for all commercial portfolios and products. This role requires a balance of strong commercial credit acumen, operational leadership, and adherence to regulatory expectations for independent credit review functions. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Vice President, Commercial Credit Review in executing credit review activities aligned to plan and scope
  • Lead day-to-day review execution for assigned portfolios or projects, including scoping, file selection, and timeline management
  • Supervise and coach a team of experienced credit professionals; provide guidance on methodology, issue identification, and escalation protocols
  • Perform secondary reviews of workpapers to ensure completeness, quality, and adherence to standards
  • Review credit files and perform risk assessments to evaluate the appropriateness of risk ratings, underwriting quality, and compliance with internal credit policies
  • Identify credit quality weaknesses, emerging risks, and process gaps; formulate recommendations for improvement
  • Assist in the drafting of issue summaries and reports; review findings with stakeholders and facilitate initial response discussions
  • Participate in refinement of sampling strategies and review methodology based on portfolio trends and risk focus
  • Support validation of issue remediation and documentation closure
  •  Act as a liaison to internal stakeholders within the business or second line for specific review segments

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, economics, or a related field 
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in commercial credit risk management, commercial lending, credit review, audit, or other related function.
  • Deep expertise of credit analysis, financial statement analysis, risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory requirements, particularly in commercial lending.
  • Proven ability to build, develop, and lead high-performing teams to deliver independent credit assessments.
  • Comprehensive understanding of industry regulations and best practices in commercial lending and credit risk management.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and make sound decisions.

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
