Job Description

This role supports in-field Account Managers across multiple regions, including Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, and New England (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine).

The District Manager, Retina, is responsible for leading a region team of field-based Account Managers, Retina (AMR’s) promoting AbbVie’s Retina injectable portfolio.  The District Manager will also oversee all aspects of managing the region including sales results and accountability, ensuring all AMR’s needs and opportunities are addressed through training, development, and disciplinary actions as necessary.  They are responsible for in-field coaching and development of their region AMRs to advance their skills and increase their impact to grow product demand. The region manager is also responsible for recruiting and hiring, managing region budgets, and developing and maintaining key customer relationships to ensure the overall success of the Retina region.

This position is responsible for accomplishing objectives of US Retina franchise’s short- and long-term strategy while leading the region’s execution of all promotional and tactical initiatives. The District Manager is responsible for ensuring that their sales team meets or exceeds all business unit metric and performance goals.  They will develop and implement procedures and practices establishing communication, development and direction to meet or exceed these goals. They must have the ability to lead and motivate others to attain individual or collective goals and objectives outlined for the Region and National sales team.  The District Manager will demonstrate leadership in needs-based account selling processes that will deliver a long-term competitive advantage in the region.  They must also provide leadership in KOL promotional programs, key account management and provide leadership that delivers executional success and drives product demand.

This position is part of a Retina sales team promoting a mature buy and bill Retina injectable therapy with growth opportunity while preparing for pipeline commercialization when directed.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate in-field activity to achieve results and agreed-upon targets. Maximize market, segment, and team dynamics to drive both top- and bottom-line results.
  • Ensure smooth, collaborative efforts in both day to day and long term business execution. Set tone and pace for business process and organization.
  • Understand and present a market and franchise/business point of view when leading teams and championing in-field meeting by developing a mastery of product and disease state information, as well as pertinent Market dynamics, including Managed Care landscape.
  • Coach, mentor, educate and develop direct and indirect team members to enhance individual skills and elevate overall team performance. Hold direct reports accountable to behaviors and expectations.
  • Driving a personal auto or company car or truck, or a powered piece of material handling equipment.

Essential Skills, Experience, and Competencies:

  • Supervisory/Management experience.  Ability to effectively lead team to achieve consistent sales performance in the region
  • Ability to evaluate staff deployment as well as region and territory assignments
  • Ability to monitor field activity to ensure balanced workloads; exercise control over resources, budgets and expenses; oversee business operations including accounts receivable, etc.
  • Superior leadership qualities and superior business acumen
  • Ability to effectively coach and develop others using strong analytical, decision making and results orientation skills
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills to effectively work with many diverse customers and employees
  • Strong problem resolution skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to communicate with many diverse customer audiences, therapeutic decision makers, and other influencers
  • Excellent presentation skills to engage and meet the needs of various audiences
  • Superior organization and project management skills
  • Strong business planning skills
  • Financial/budgetary experience
  • Ability to travel, a minimum of 75%

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in health, sciences, pharmacy or business-related field preferred or relevant and equivalent industry experience required.
  • Business analysis and planning skills that drive sales performance.
  • Proven District Manager leadership to include: In good standing with safety and compliance standards. Minimum four years pharmaceutical sales management experience (external management experience can be considered). Is currently meeting performance expectations. Is living the AbbVie Way and effectively demonstrating the Leadership Attributes.
  • Excellent judgment and decision making skills. Ability to articulate the scientific aspects of treatments and therapeutic areas
  • Proven ability to deliver candid, effective feedback and efficiently manage performance. Ability to develop talent for promotional opportunities.
  • Ability to create a culture of winning and full team engagement.
  • An essential requirement of your position is to satisfy all applicable health care industry representative (HCIR) credentialing requirements to gain and maintain entry into facilities and organizations that are in your assigned territory. You must also be in good standing and/or eligible to obtain these credentials.
  • These HCIR credentialing requirements may include, but are not limited to, background checks, drug screens, proof of immunization/vaccination for various diseases, fingerprinting and specific licenses required by individual state or cities. Please remember that you are solely responsible for ensuring that you satisfy all HCIR credentialing requirements and for any associated liability for failing to do so. to AbbVie has resources to answer questions you may have regarding your responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, MBA Preferred
  • Minimum 5-7 years of Healthcare/Pharmaceutical sales experience in buy and bill, or medical/surgical device markets is required
  • Minimum 3-5 years of successful sales management or equivalent people leadership experience in a buy and bill or medical device/surgical market is required
  • Product launch experience in a management or leadership role
  • Knowledge and experience of legal and regulatory requirement related to the Pharmaceutical or medical industries
  • Market Planning/strategy development experience and the ability to execute key strategies
  • Financial/budgetary experience
