About the Role

As a Backend Product Engineer, you’ll design and scale the systems that power real-time voice AI for hundreds of thousands of developers. Your work will focus on reliability, performance, and security—ensuring Vapi can meet enterprise-grade demands while innovating quickly.

What You’ll Do

• Design and implement backend services in Node.js/TypeScript (experience with Go or Python a plus)

• Build APIs and infrastructure powering real-time voice interactions

• Drive improvements in system performance, scalability, and reliability

• Collaborate with frontend engineers to deliver seamless end-to-end product features

• Elevate security, compliance, and observability across backend systems

Who You Are

• Strong backend fundamentals, with experience in distributed systems, APIs, and cloud infrastructure

• 3+ years of backend engineering, with at least 1 year at a startup (<100 employees)

• Proven track record shipping complex features to production at scale

• Comfortable balancing speed with rigor in system design and security

• Self-starter who thrives in dynamic, fast-moving environments
