Job Details:

Purpose

Provide strategic leadership for technology in the Office of the Dean of Students (DOS). Manage daily departmental IT operations. Supervise the broader IT strategy covering applications/systems, security, vendor partnerships, data analytics, elections technology, web platforms, and staff support. Ensure technology resources align with departmental goals, divisional standards, and university policies. Coordinate with Technology Resources (TRECS), including their Desktop Support Services (DSS) team and their Application Development and Management (ADM) team, as well as Enterprise Technology (ET) and the IT Coordinator for VPSA to ensure resilient, secure, and documented IT operations. This position emphasizes departmental strategy, business continuity, and daily partnership with DOS leadership, while leveraging shared-service providers for technical implementation. The role ensures DOS addresses legacy technical debt and modernizes student-facing systems.

Responsibilities

  • Departmental IT Strategy & Business Continuity: Lead the strategic and technical IT objectives for DOS.  Coordinates with DOS leadership on strategic initiatives to meet the needs of the department.  Ensures all solutions meet university compliance requirements. Supervise and coordinate multiple IT projects to ensure timelines, budgets, and resources are managed effectively. Ensure DOS requirements are expressed accurately to develop robust project requirements.

  • Data Analytics & Reporting: Lead development of departmental reporting and analytics solutions that support assessment, accreditation, and student success. Partner with divisional assessment teams to design and maintain reports, dashboards, and data integrations outside ADM’s application support scope. Promote consistent documentation and transparency of DOS data systems

  • Manage DOS IT Team: Recruits, hires, and supervises IT team staff, including the Software Developer and functional supervision of the Web Developer.  Oversee agreements with campus partners, such as TRecs, to provide desktop and administrative application support to DOS.

  • Infrastructure & Departmental Technology:Serves as Lead Technical Service Contact (TSC) for DOS and the custodian for IT Applications, Security and Systems, including both homegrown and purchased systems.

  • Web, Database, & Elections Platforms: Oversee DOS Website, Student Government elections.  Ensure compliance with accessibility standards.

  • Division-Wide IT Strategy and Support: Serve as a member of the Student Affairs IT Leadership Committee. Coordinate long-term IT strategy for all of VPSA. Focus on stabilizing divisional systems, reducing technical debt, and modernizing student-facing solutions. Provide advising and consultation to the Vice President of Student Affairs and Senior Team. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree
  • Five years of progressive IT experience
  • Three years in a management or leadership role directly leading IT professionals
  • Experience within a higher education setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Ten or more years of progressive IT experience
  • Five or more years in a management or leadership role directly leading IT professionals
  • Knowledge of UT Austin and UT System policies, systems, and technology
  • Knowledge of the following systems: Anthology, Maxient, PantrySoft, CampusESP, Monday.com, Real Response, GivePulse
  • Knowledge of container platforms (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) for packaging and deploying solutions.
  • Knowledge of Python and scripting for automation, data processing, and integration with enterprise systems.
  • Familiarity with software stacks related to web development (frameworks, APIs, and content management systems).
  • Strong understanding of database design, management, and security best practices.

Working Conditions

  • Continuously maintain and adhere to the department’s Vision, Mission, and Values, Performance Standards, and Communication Credo.
  • Regular and punctual attendance required; additional hours may be needed.
  • This position is designated as an essential worker and may need to report to work, either in-person or remotely, after hours, during UT holidays or emergency closures, and/or while on leave (excluding Family Medical Leave unless permitted to work intermittently).
  • Comply with departmental and university policies, and all other UT and UT System rules and regulations.
  • Position is a Campus Security Authority (Clery Act) and a Responsible Employee (Title IX).
  • Security sensitive; exempt classified.
  • Physical/Environmental Demands: May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard. Use of manual dexterity. Lifting and moving. Exposure to alarms, large crowds, windowless work areas, and noise. Must be able to work under stress, independently and as part of a team, and with overlapping projects. Must be able to manage multiple tasks, maintain confidentiality, and provide leadership in a complex, fast-paced environment.
