At this pivotal time, UAB seeks a strategic and visionary leader to serve as the next Chief Information Officer (CIO). Reporting directly to the President and serving on the President’s Cabinet, the CIO oversees the university’s information technology strategy and operations, ensuring that technology fully supports UAB’s academic, research, clinical, and administrative missions. The CIO will guide UAB’s transformation into a data-driven institution, championing the development of a unified data strategy, robust governance, and advanced analytics to inform planning, decision-making, and innovation across the campus and health system. The CIO will partner closely with senior leaders, faculty, staff, and health system executives to deliver secure, reliable, and forward-looking technology solutions that foster collaboration and enhance institutional performance. They will advance UAB’s IT infrastructure and cybersecurity capabilities, promote data-informed decision-making, and ensure technology investments anticipate emerging needs, including the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence.
The ideal candidate is a transformative technology leader with the vision and expertise to guide a large, complex academic and research enterprise through digital transformation. The successful candidate will bring at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience, preferably in a research-intensive university, academic medical center, or similarly complex environment. They will have a strong track record of leading enterprise-wide IT strategy and operations, expertise in data governance and emerging technologies, and proven ability to develop and lead high-performing teams. A bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
