Skills
- Hands-on optics, photonics, and laser technology experience
- System-level optical design and integration experience
- Experience with optical test equipment (power meters, interferometers, laser sources)
- Programming experience (Python, C++, and/or LabVIEW) and Linux familiarity
- Knowledge of free-space optical principles, link budgets, and signal integrity
- Experience with infrared alignment, precision metrology, and optical troubleshooting
- Familiarity with pointing, acquisition, and tracking techniques
- Ability to assess risk and make design decisions with incomplete data
Responsibilities
- Design, analyze, and validate free-space optical laser communication systems
- Define system requirements and lead architecture and trade studies
- Lead verification testing including environmental qualification, performance characterization, reliability, and fault-injection testing
- Plan and execute field testing and optical experiments; review test data and lead anomaly investigations
- Maintain link budgets, design specifications, and system capability documentation
- Interface with manufacturing and supply chain to ensure producible designs
- Collaborate with software/automation teams to develop test and production scripts/tools
- Represent laser communications systems in cross-disciplinary program-level trades and risk discussions
Education
- Bachelor's degree in physics or an engineering discipline (required)
- Master's degree or PhD in physics or engineering (preferred)
