Airspace Integration Engineer III - Human Machine Interface

SkyGrid, a Boeing Company, exists to open the sky for autonomous flight. Based in Austin, Texas, SkyGrid builds ground based high-assurance third-party services to enable the safe operations and airspace integration of highly automated and autonomous aircraft. SkyGrid also acts as a key operational nexus for advanced air mobility, integrating and managing data, infrastructure, access, and traffic to support seamless and efficient air traffic services.

The SkyGrid team is seeking a talented Airspace Integration Engineer with a background in developing aviation human-machine systems interfaces to support SkyGrid’s mission to enable the airspace integration of emerging aircraft operations worldwide. This role will play a critical part in developing human-systems interfaces for ground-based automation systems that will be used by aircraft operators and air traffic controllers to support high-density, low-altitude operations in airspaces worldwide. This is a hybrid position based in Austin, TX and will report to the Airspace Integration Manager within SkyGrid’s Research and Development (R&D) organization.

Performance Objectives:
  • Contribute to the design of novel user interfaces for SkyGrid’s operator-facing services.
  • Assess, track, and document the Human Readiness Level (HRL) of in-development SkyGrid products.
  • Collaborate with other Human Factors and User Experience specialists to translate customer needs into actionable work items that drive user-interface development.
  • Coordinate human-in-the-loop test plans for SkyGrid’s ground-based automation systems supporting the airspace integration of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).
  • Identify and document design philosophy for novel user interfaces based on human factors principles.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with other Human Factors and User Experience engineers at SkyGrid to design innovative user interfaces for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) traffic management systems.
  • Create low-fidelity wireframes to explore and validate workflows, information hierarchy, and interaction patterns early in the design process.
  • Create high-fidelity UI designs that accurately represent the final visual design for implementation in software.
  • Coordinate human-in-the-loop tests for ground-based automation systems supporting the airspace integration of AAM.
  • Monitor and analyze trends in the design of user interfaces for AAM traffic management tools.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Human Factors, UI/UX Design, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 6 years of related experience in aerospace/flight operations.
  • Experience designing user interfaces for aviation applications.
  • Working knowledge of FAA and MIL-STD human factors design standards.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design tools (e.g., Figma).
  • Familiarity with UX design systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience conducting user research and task analyses.
  • Experience evaluating human performance and user experience using both qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Familiarity with user-facing systems used for air traffic management.
  • Experience designing user interfaces for certified aviation products, such as flight deck displays and crew alerting systems.
