Director of Digital Experience

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the United States and a thriving cultural center for the Bay Area. We cannot imagine life without art; it inspires and connects us every day. Now more than ever, these connections matter and are aligned with our values.

Inclusive: We strive to be a museum of many voices in dialogue.

Passionate: We believe working with art is more than a job or trusteeship - it's a way of life.

Brave: We are committed to approaching our work with courage and a sense of adventure, always ready to explore new perspectives.

Empathic: We aim to act like a person, not an institution.

SFMOMA is a place for the infinitely curious to explore, support, and experience the art of our time. We believe that modern and contemporary art can influence the way we think, view the world, and embrace the many voices and perspectives around us. We aspire to foster an environment that elicits joy, nurtures a sense of belonging and purpose—where difference is seen as a strength, and every one is appreciated for their whole self.

Schedule: Full Time, 35 hours/week, at least three days working onsite

SFMOMA is searching for a bold, strategic, and execution-driven Director of Digital Experience to lead the vision and delivery of innovative digital experiences across the visitor journey—at home, in the galleries, and on the go. This leadership role will guide a multidisciplinary team in delivering dynamic, user-centered digital platforms that reinforce our mission, amplify storytelling, and deepen audience connection.

The Director of Digital Experience will oversee the creative direction, product development and daily operations of all core digital channels including digital signage, in-gallery interfaces, mobile tools, and emerging platforms. This role will own the integration of digital technologies into the broader visitor experience while stewarding the institution’s digital brand identity across platforms.

Under the direct management of the Chief Operating Officer and supervision of the Chief Education and Community Engagement Officer, this role will support cross-functional teams composed of internal and external software developers, UX and visual designers, content managers, and product strategists. The Director will also collaborate with curators, education teams, IT, marketing, and executive leadership to ensure alignment with institutional goals and strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities & Duties
  • Lead the development and execution of a bold, audience-centered digital experience strategy across web, mobile, and onsite/in-gallery platforms, advancing SFMOMA’s mission through innovative storytelling and design.
  • Champion new, high-impact digital product initiatives annually, guiding them from concept to launch. Embrace experimentation and take calculated risks to push the boundaries of how technology enhances art engagement.
  • Integrate and test the latest digital tools and platforms, ensuring SFMOMA remains at the forefront of digital innovation in the cultural sector.
  • Partner across design, development, marketing, and curatorial teams to translate insights into compelling digital experiences that serve both users and institutional goals. Use research, A/B testing, and analytics to deepen engagement and drive conversion.
  • Build intuitive, end-to-end user journeys that connect the visitor experience across digital and physical spaces—future-facing, accessible, and scalable.
  • Foster a culture of iteration and experimentation. Support teams in challenging the status quo and exploring new modes of digital engagement.
  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team, amplifying individual strengths while cultivating a unified, high-performing group.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to align priorities and secure support for digital initiatives, working closely with philanthropy teams on grant writing and donor engagement.

Qualifications & Skills
  • Minimum of seven (7) years leading digital strategy and product development, preferably in a cultural or mission-driven organization.
  • Proven success delivering user-centered digital experiences (interactives, AR/VR, video projection, emerging technologies such as AI) that drive engagement and measurable results.
  • Fluency in the technical requirements of digital and media-based projects, including an understanding of digital interfaces, IT/AV infrastructure, software platforms, and best practices for installation, presentation, and long-term maintenance.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating UX, UI, and digital storytelling expertise.
  • Skilled in managing internal and external cross-functional teams and complex projects in fast-paced environments.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies, accessibility standards, and inclusive design practices.
  • Excellent leadership, collaboration, and communication skills.
  • Ability to navigate vendor platforms, APIs, and system integrations.
  • Portfolio required, with clear articulation or role and outcomes.
