About the Job:

The Facilities Management department is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Maintenance Project Coordinator I. Strong communication skills are essential for coordinating maintenance and repair projects, collaborating effectively with contractors and stakeholders, and contributing to the continuous improvement of our facilities. 

As part of the Authority’s career pathway program School 2 SAN, this opportunity connects recent graduates and emerging professionals in engineering or a closely related field with meaningful work at a globally recognized airport. Whether joining as an entry-level Maintenance Project Coordinator or a more experienced one, the selected candidate will engage in ensuring the organization’s infrastructure is safe, reliable, and efficient. This position offers valuable hands-on experience, professional growth, and the chance to be part of a dynamic team dedicated to excellence in airport operations. 

What is School 2 SAN? The School 2 SAN program provides entry-level opportunities for individuals with limited or no prior work experience. Our goal is to help students and recent graduates build their knowledge, skills, and confidence on the job, while gaining exposure to the wide range of careers available in aviation, public service, and infrastructure. You are eligible if you meet the minimum education requirements of the position. Individuals hired through this pathway begin at a lower salary and are automatically moved to the organization’s benchmarked series hiring salary once the minimum years of experience have been met. No prior work experience required—you’ll gain that here! 

What You’ll Do:

  • Project Coordination: Act as the liaison between the Authority and contractors for maintenance and repair projects involving runways, aprons, facilities, landscaping, and related infrastructure. Coordinate projects with contractors, internal stakeholders, tenants, and other parties. Monitor and inspect projects. 
  • Inspection & Compliance: Inspect and ensure contractor compliance with safety, security procedures, and contractual requirements. Maintain project lifecycle documentation, prepare progress reports, review and approve change order requests, make field adjustments, and document work changes. 
  • Project Development & Management: Collaborate in project reviews, develop scope of work, generate bids, RFPs, and cost estimates. Participate in contractor selection, coordinate contract execution, issue letters to proceed, close out projects, and authorize contractor payments. Assess facilities to identify necessary maintenance and repairs. 
  • Equipment Operation: Operate specialized equipment including computers, engineering software (AutoCAD), drafting tools, and vehicles to travel to various Authority sites. 
  • Continuous Improvement & Flexibility: Engage in efforts to develop and streamline programs, practices, reports, data, budgets, and infrastructure. Generate cost data and stay current with industry and regulatory trends. Flexibility required to work rotating shifts, including weekends, holidays, and nights. Perform additional duties as assigned. 
  • Operational Driving*: Operate and drive Authority vehicles to work sites to complete required inspections.

  2. Project Management – Accurately assesses project scope, budget, and timeline by determining required process steps and resources needed to achieve defined outcomes and objectives; monitors and verifies task completion and resolves coordination issues to assure efficient, timely completion.
  3. Relationship & Interpersonal Skills – Cultivates interpersonal rapport and trust, both up and down, by exhibiting consistency and reliability; demonstrates awareness of others’ needs.
  4. Influence – Communicates and writes proficiently to gain others’ support for ideas, proposals, projects, and solutions; articulates clear rationale in discussion of the benefits and drawbacks of various options, is assertive while exhibiting flexibility.
  5. Safety – Continuously promote and uphold safety standards by proactively identifying risks, following established protocols, and fostering a culture of awareness.
  6. Leveraging Technology - Effectively uses and generates information electronically and integrates technology solutions and systems.  

The Experience You Need to Have**:

  • Associate degree in engineering or closely related field. 
  • Two years of paraprofessional, public works-related construction and inspection experience. 
  • Or one year of paraprofessional engineering technician experience. 
  • Or an equivalent combination of training and experience 
  • This position is part of our School 2 SAN program, which supports early-career professionals in gaining hands-on experience in public service. Candidates may qualify with a relevant degree even if they have not yet met the minimum years of experience. 

Preferred Education; Certifications; and Licenses:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a related course  
  • Certifications through the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA), the Association of Facilities Engineering (AFE), Building Owners and Managers Institute (BOMI), US Green Building Council (USGBC), International Code Council (ICC), American Construction Inspectors Association (ACIA), or Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).  

Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements:

  • Maintain a valid CA driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Authority’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Successful completion of a fingerprint-based background investigation, training, and testing required for employment and operation and operation of Authority and San Diego County physical security, surveillance, radio and telecommunications equipment.

*Driving is an Essential Function

This role requires regular driving as a critical part of performing work-related duties, specifically involving the operation of Airport Authority vehicles. A valid California driver’s license is required, along with strict adherence to all traffic laws and safety regulations. Applicants must maintain an acceptable driving record to operate Authority vehicles. Compliance with Airport Authority vehicle use policies, including safety protocols and reporting requirements, is mandatory. Applicants must acknowledge that driving Airport Authority vehicles is an essential function of this role.
