Community Engagement Manager

Department Overview

The Bob and Charlee Moore Institute for Nutrition & Wellness (Moore Institute) and Center for Developmental Health (CDH) work to improve the health of all Oregonians by generating and translating research surrounding the effects of nutrition and toxic stress exposure on chronic disease risk. All work is grounded in a field of research known as the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease, or DOHaD. The CDH is the research-focused arm and the Moore Institute is the communications, education and outreach arm. Together, the Moore Institute and CDH report to one Director who oversees and aligns the strategic direction of both groups.

 

The Community Engagement Manager is a leadership role responsible for developing, executing, and continuously improving a comprehensive community engagement strategy for the Moore Institute and CDH. This position provides strategic direction and oversight for all community engagement activities, including the Moore Institute’s high-profile, statewide Nutrition Oregon Campaign. This role is responsible for ensuring all community engagement efforts align with the broader goals and values of the Moore Institute and CDH

The Community Engagement Manager works in close partnership with leadership across the Moore Institute and CDH to build and sustain authentic community relationships, lead public education efforts, and manage high-impact community relationships and events.

This position also serves as a visible representative of the Moore Institute and CDH to key stakeholders, including public, private, and legislative entities. Strategic thinking, exceptional communication skills, and a passion for equity-driven community work are essential.

This can be a hybrid position. Travel is necessary.

Function/Duties of Position

Strategic Community Engagement: Lead the planning and execution of all community engagement activities, including the Nutrition Oregon Campaign, in coordination with outside consultants, community partners, and internal stakeholders. Develop and sustain long-term partnerships with diverse communities and organizations across the state. Provide strategic recommendations based on research, evaluation, and best practices in community engagement.

 

Leadership & Supervision: Supervise and mentor Community Engagement Specialist, providing guidance, professional development, and performance evaluation. Provide leadership in the design and implementation of community engagement strategies that reflect organizational priorities.

 

Collaboration & Communication: Collaborate with the Moore Institute communications team and OHSU-wide engagement staff to ensure brand alignment and message consistency. Deliver presentations and facilitate public education activities that advance the mission and vision of the Institute. Represent the Moore Institute and CDH in external meetings, forums, and coalitions.

 

Project Management: Oversee planning, logistics, and implementation of community-based events, meetings, coalitions, and campaigns. Manage timelines, budgets, and reporting for community engagement initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and seven years of experience OR

  • Master’s Degree + 6 years of experience or demonstrated equivalent experience.

  • Previous advanced project administration/management including program evaluation, relationship development, outreach and/or community engagement experience.

  • Ability to develop, implement and analyze strategic plans andcommunity engagement campaigns.

  • Proven proficiency in typing with accuracy and efficiency, supporting effective documentation and communication.

  • Experience in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) to analyze data, create reports, and develop presentations for leadership and stakeholders.

  • Strong independent judgment with the ability to think strategically, anticipate challenges, and lead projects through ambiguous or evolving parameters.

  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills, with a track record of engaging diverse audiences and fostering collaborative relationships across teams and external partners.

  • Demonstrated success in setting team and individual priorities, managing workflows, and driving self-directed work to meet organizational goals.

  • Skilled at managing multiple high-priority tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, utilizing sound judgment to maintain smooth operations despite interruptions.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, capable of influencing and interacting effectively at all organizational levels and with diverse groups.

  • Adaptable and flexible leader, quick to learn and implement new systems, processes, and technologies to improve team performance.

  • Extensive experience overseeing meetings and event management, including logistics coordination, scheduling, and development of strategic communication materials.

  • Strong writing and editing capabilities, with experience preparing professional reports, proposals, and correspondence.

  • Consistently demonstrates professionalism in all interactions—face-to-face, phone, and electronic communication.

  • Proven record of reliability, punctuality, and consistently exceeding performance expectations in prior leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Public Health or Management
  • Health care, public health research or academic setting background; understanding of research vocabulary. Advocacy and community relations experience.
  • Knowledge of health care, science issues; knowledge of building community relationships and cultivating public will. Understanding of Collective Impact framework and equity-based community development.

Additional Details

This position works in a busy environment with interruptions, multiple demands and people interactions. Must be able to travel to all CDH/Moore worksite locations, including using the tram. Occasional evening and weekend work. Travel is necessary.
