Product Manager

Welcome to the future of energy

We are both an electricity retailer and a tech platform and we think there is no better way to address our greatest challenge, climate change, than with the combination of those two.

Through our proprietary tech platform, Kraken, we are changing the way people interact with their energy company - by making it approachable, low cost, easy-to-understand, and most importantly, 100% renewable.

Octopus Energy started with a bold idea: to build Britain's first truly digital energy supplier.

By combining world-class tech with brilliant humans who care deeply about customers and driving the renewable energy transition, we made it happen and earlier this year, we became Britain's largest energy supplier.

Since 2020, we’ve been bringing that same mission to the United States: to provide fair, affordable, and 100% renewable power directly to consumers, starting with the largest deregulated market - Texas.

We're building the future of energy in the US, and we're doing it fast. Our engineering teams are focused on creating products that make a real difference, from empowering customers with rooftop solar and smart battery technology, to optimizing EV charging to benefit the grid. We’re using our tech to launch innovative rate structures and tackle the biggest challenges in energy with world-class engineering and a customer-first mindset.

As a member of the Octopus Tech Team, you'll have real ownership, variety, and the chance to shape products that make a tangible difference in people's lives – lowering bills, enabling greener living, and delivering experiences customers genuinely love. You'll work side by side with teams across customer service, sales & marketing, operations, finance and data, and see the impact of your work in the real world, fast.

We are currently looking for a US-based Product Manager to support our Octopus Energy Engineering team; in the US this is mainly Frontend developers with a growing backend function. Your work will split across managing priorities for the US-based devs and coordinating projects with the global engineering team.

We’re looking for people who want to take part in this journey and help shape the future of energy in the US. If this sounds exciting, we'd love to chat.

The team's responsibilities include...
  • Working with global Octopus Energy engineering teams to promote and enable the development of full-stack features using the Octopus Energy backend.
  • Migrating existing Octopus Energy-specific features from other repositories to the Octopus Energy backend.
  • Incubating and implementing features with the US team, then supporting further productionizing to make available globally.
  • Developing features with scalability in mind to ensure seamless adoption across all Octopus Energy regions. This involves gathering requirements from each region and defining a unified core solution that meets the needs of all eight regions.
  • Defining the technical requirements for dependencies on other teams and clearly communicating the priority of these requests to Client Delivery teams.
  • Maintaining the feature set to a very high degree of functionality and stability, regularly performing codebase optimization and tidying of tech debt.

We embrace flat hierarchies and an open, agile culture that fosters innovation, flexibility, and creativity. We don’t hang our personalities up with our coats and nor should you. At Octopus, we hire great people who get stuff done, all while being themselves.

What you'll do...
  • Become an expert in our vendor software toolsets (like Kraken) which much of our tech stack is deeply integrated with
  • Perform initial issue investigation (e.g. via UI and basic tooling) to assist bug triage process and manage efficient resolution
  • Efficiently bring together subject matter experts for rapid decision making when implementing features/bug fixes & proactively make decisions yourself where needed
  • Weekly prioritization of demands on US engineering team across new feature releases and resolving bugs; clear communication on goals and reflection on delivery
  • Collaborate with senior team members to build an achievable and well-considered product roadmap; early recognition & signaling of factors which could impact delivery
  • Proactively remove blockers for developers (e.g. ensuring data access, advancing critical dependencies ahead of schedule)

What you'll need to have...
  • Real care for our customers and passion for delivering excellent customer experience
  • Excellent written communication skills, e.g. clearly laying out trade-offs where product decisions are required or sharing key updates with wider team visibility
  • Excellent day-to-day project management skills, identifying blockers and remedying to ensure a high pace of delivery is maintained
  • Experience taking problems, rather than strict guidelines, and developing strong solutions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineers about system architecture
  • Ability to recognize what needs to be done, and, just as importantly, what doesn’t need to be done right now
  • The ability to spin many plates and context switch between competing demands on a regular basis
  • A drive to collaborate and reach common understanding
  • Comfort proactively reaching out to multiple teams, ability to maintain strong working relationships across continents / different timezones
  • Familiarity with backend and frontend engineering concepts
  • A bias toward the proactive with an ability to make decisions quickly
  • Confidence tackling large-scale tasks individually
  • An empathetic approach to delegating work and collaborating with others

Our stack...
  • Notion
  • Asana
  • Miro
  • Figma
  • Python-based development framework
  • Database management
  • API design (GraphQL, REST)

Handy, but not essential...
  • Previous experience in a fast-paced environment
  • Previous experience in the energy industry

Why else you'll love it here...
  • Our company culture - We are an organization where people learn, decide, and build quicker. Where people work with autonomy, alongside a wide range of amazing co-owners, on projects that break new ground. We want your hard work to be rewarded with perks you actually care about! We won best company to work for in 2022, on Glassdoor we were voted 50 best places to work in 2022.
  • Great medical, dental, and vision insurance options including FSAs.
  • Paid time off — we know working hard means also being able to recharge as needed, we trust our employees to get the work done and take the time they need.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match.
  • Parental leave. Biological, adoptive and foster parents are all eligible. Pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • Flexible working environment - genuine work life balance here, we are in the top 5 companies in the UK, we treat you as a human, and do our best to make work and life merge smoothly together
  • Equity Options Scheme - you own your own part of the business, share options in the whole Octopus Energy Group so we all work together towards success
  • Salary - The expected salary range for this Product Manager role is between $90,000 - $130,000 annually. Your exact compensation will be determined by your technical expertise, professional experience, location, and how well your unique skills align with the role's specific needs. Please note that the top end of this range is reserved for candidates who exceptionally meet all criteria.
  • Your development is important - we support and help with development including internal and external courses, learning, study support etc, all bespoke to you.

If this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you.

Studies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.
