Specialist, Software Engineer (Java, SQL)

In this position you will support our eB2B data feeds applications by upgrading, maintaining, and resolving issues inside the internal data feeds applications, as well as incident management for our partner integrations. This work involves development of adding, editing, and/or removing data elements within the data feeds sent to our firm partners. You will work with data feeds sourced with data from upstream systems across Annuity, Life, and Retirement lines of business. These data feeds are vital to our Nationwide firm partners because they provide them essential information about the contracts and policies they hold with Nationwide.

We are looking for candidates passionate about developing data-oriented applications, ETL, and B2B integrations, who want to learn about various data pipelines across different lines of business. You will be exposed to code that in some cases is highly customized to meet the crucial data feed needs of our external firm partners.

Top Technical Skills:

• Proficiency in Java
• Proficiency in SQL
• Proficiency working with cloud platforms like AWS, Snowflake, and Oracle
• Proficient knowledge of Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) for secure data transmissions from internal to external, or vice versa
• Proficiency in or awareness of networking concepts such as firewall rules

Top Responsibilities:

• Developing data feed fixes/enhancements
• Managing and resolving production incidents and service requests in ServiceNow to ensure data feed reliability and partner satisfaction
• Investigating and troubleshooting data feed issues, collaborating with internal teams and external partners to drive timely resolution
• Active participation in the team’s agile cadences including standup, sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospective

As a Software Engineer, you will focus primarily on providing high quality, efficient technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications. In this capacity, you’ll analyze, code, configure, test, debug, document and maintain applications.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

• Analyzes, solutions, develops, tests, debugs, documents and deploys software according to standards in an agile environment.

• Applies secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.

• Uses DevSecOps practices, tooling and techniques.

• Drives continuous improvement and learning through ongoing training, practice and innovation.

• Manages medium to large project priorities, deadlines and deliverables proactively.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Manager/Director. 

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Completion of undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree. 

Experience: Four or more years of analysis and technology experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proficiency in one or more programming language such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript. Strong knowledge of software development lifecycle. Proven ability to tackle complex business and development problems. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
