Job Description Summary

The Miami University Libraries is seeking a strategic, collaborative, and innovative leader to serve as Head of the Department of Learning and Engagement; Associate Librarian or Principal Librarian. Following a recent organizational review, the Libraries merged the Learning and Engagement Department with the Create and Innovate unit to unite their strengths in instruction, engagement, student success, and hands-on learning. The resulting department includes five librarians, three professional staff, and a cohort of student employees. The Department Head will set the vision and direction for the combined department including leadership for our library instruction program; foundational learning activities; outreach and experiential learning; and support for the Libraries’ Makerspace, media studios, and other technology-enhanced learning spaces. The successful candidate will also plan and oversee the ongoing integration of services and programs; enhance existing services; and develop new collaborative initiatives across campus through engagement with university stakeholders promoting student success, experiential learning, and curricular and pedagogical improvement. The position reports to the Associate Dean of Libraries. Full-time, continuing contract eligible librarians are appointed or promoted to the rank of Associate Librarian or Principal Librarian in accordance with the Libraries Appointment Rank and Promotion System (LARPS): https://www.lib.miamioh.edu/about/larps

Job Description

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate departmental staff
  • Manage change and solve problems in alignment with Libraries and University priorities
  • Set departmental vision in alignment with the Libraries Catalyst strategic plan and the Miami University Strategic Plan, MiamiTHRIVE
  • Represent and connect the Libraries at University events, committees, and
  • collaborations
  • Oversee the provision of a wide range of instructional and outreach services, including; Information literacy instruction; Student success programs; Outreach to new students and other groups; Personal Librarian Program; Instructional Design; Maker and DIY literacy instruction
  • Drive the development and management of innovative spaces that support hands-on learning and creativity, such as the Makerspace and media studios.
  • Monitor and evaluate trends in academic libraries related to student success,
  • experiential learning, and emerging educational technologies
  • Work collaboratively with fellow department heads, librarians, and staff in a team environment to help implement the Libraries’ vision and goals.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution or non-U.S. equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in an academic, research, or special library
  • Record of scholarship and professional achievement appropriate for appointment at the rank of Associate or Principal Librarian
  • Experience with library instruction and learning support

Consideration may be given to candidates with:

  • Familiarity with current and emerging technologies, especially educational technologies, makerspaces, or collaborative learning spaces
  • At least 3 years of supervisory or leadership experience
  • Experience assessing instructional services
  • Experience with fundraising or grant writing
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to manage multiple projects
  • Commitment to professional development
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills
  • Experience with assessment of instructional programs
