Position Summary and Qualifications:

The Collegiate Recovery & Prevention Education Specialist plays a vital role in supporting Saint Joseph University's commitment to student well-being, substance use prevention education, and recovery. This position is responsible for contributing to a recovery-supportive campus environment, developing and managing programs for students in recovery from substance use disorders, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the on-campus Recovery Residence and Collegiate Recovery Program. This position also supports substance use prevention education efforts campus wide.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Student Support & Well-being and working closely with other members of the SS&WB team, the Collegiate Recovery & Prevention Education Specialist will serve as a visible campus resource, offering guidance, advocacy, and direct support for students in recovery, and an active member of the Student Support & Wellbeing team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Education, Program Development and Campus Engagement
● Serve as a key substance use prevention educator for SJU students.
● Collaborate with the Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) Team to further implement a comprehensive, evidence-based recovery support program.
● Promote a welcoming and inclusive recovery community that honors diverse pathways to recovery, including abstinence-based and harm-reduction approaches.
● Coordinate recovery-friendly events, workshops, and social activities that support sober lifestyles and student well-being.
● Maintain a robust CRP presence online and through social media.
● Serve as a co-facilitator of the SJU “Allies of Recovery” Training program for students, faculty and staff.
● Facilitate SS&WB psychoeducational classes for students related to alcohol, cannabis and other well-being issues, including those who may have been found in violation of university policy
Student Support and Community Building
● Serve as the primary point of contact for students in recovery and those engaged in the Collegiate Recovery Program.
● Collaborate with the CRP Team to develop and monitor student Individual Recovery Plans for those in the CRP.
● Support students throughout the application and admissions process for CRP and the Recovery Residence.
 

Recovery Residence Oversight
● Manage the day-to-day operations of the on-campus Recovery Residence, including:
○ New resident orientation and move-in/move-out procedures (in collaboration with partnering Student Life offices)
○ Weekly house meetings to promote a healthy and collaborative living environment
○ Enforcement of community standards and program expectations
○ Supervision of the student live-in “Campus Life Assistant (CLA)
○ Hold office hours in the Recovery Residence office
○ Plan and implement social and educational programming with input from residents.
 

Partnerships and Outreach
● Work closely with University partners and institutes including:
○ The full Student Support & Well-being staff
○ The Center for Addiction & Recovery Education (CARE)
○ Office of Residence Life
○ Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS)
○ Other campus departments, student groups, and faculty to promote awareness, training, and recovery education
● Represent the CRP in campus-wide well-being and prevention initiatives.
● Serve as liaison for 12-step and other mutual aid groups meetings on campus.
 

Grants and Budget Management
● Assist with the management of the CRP budget and grant funding
● Collaborate with the Executive Director and University Advancement for grant writing, reporting, and implementation of funded initiatives.
 

Assessment and Leadership
● Conduct ongoing assessment of programs and services to improve impact and outcomes.
● Serve as chair or co-chair for the annual Collegiate Recovery Conference hosted at SJU.
● Act as a role model and leader for students in recovery and the broader campus community.
Secondary Responsibilities
● Contribute to Division of Student Life initiatives and serve on committees (e.g., Advisory Council on Alcohol, Drugs & Student Health).
● Fulfill duties as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act.
● Take on additional responsibilities as needed to support students and organizational goals.

Supervision

This position does not currently supervise professional staff but may work closely with graduate interns or student leaders within the program.
 

Minimum Qualifications:
Required:
● Bachelor’s degree
● Experience working with college students and/or in a case management role
● Familiarity with substance use disorder treatment modalities, including 12-step programs
● Deep understanding of Recovery
 

Preferred:
● Masters in social work, counseling, student affairs, or related field
● Experience with Collegiate Recovery Programs
● Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS)
● Background in family systems work related to recovery
● Experience in residence life, programming, or student affairs
 

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
● Some evening and weekend hours are required to meet program and community needs.
