Director, CFIUS & National Security

Required qualification: As the primary function of this role is to support CFIUS monitorship and audit engagements, the adjudication requirements set forth by the US Government require that team members be US citizens only and hold no additional citizenship.

Control Risks’ CFIUS & National Security practice is seeking a director-level candidate to join a dynamic team at the intersection of foreign direct investment, national security, and trade policy. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with the CFIUS process and other national security regulatory regimes, along with the ability to lead cross-functional teams, oversee complex engagements, and the ability to build strong relationships with clients. Relevant backgrounds may include strategic threat management, data analytics, cybersecurity, business strategy, supply chain security, and trade/export compliance.

As a Director-level employee, you will be responsible for leading and managing multi-disciplinary teams through engagements involving pre-transactional risk assessments, evaluating mitigation strategies, national security compliance program assessments, independent third-party audits and monitorships of national security agreements, and advisory projects under related regimes such as Team Telecom, export controls, sanctions, bulk data security rule, and the outbound investment security program.

Tasks and responsibilities

As a director-level employee, you will be a key member of the client engagement team with a deep understanding of both clients’ strategic objectives and the operational realities that shape their compliance posture. You will manage and execute substantive national security advisory, compliance, and monitoring projects, ensuring deliverables meet the highest standards of quality and clarity to both internal and external stakeholders. Responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to, the following:

  • Serve as subject matter expert (SME) for CFIUS monitorship and audit engagements to evaluate compliance with national security agreements
  • Perform risk assessments and advise both US and foreign companies on CFIUS and other national security regulatory risks, including Team Telecom, export controls, sanctions, supply chain security, bulk data security rule, and the outbound investment security program
  • Manage and oversee engagements, from proposal through delivery, including work product review and client communications
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, prospects, industry stakeholders, and the US government regulators
  • Support business development and marketing initiatives specific to CFIUS and national security

Knowledge and experience

  • Extensive knowledge of the CFIUS process and related national security regulatory regimes
  • Direct experience in CFIUS transactional, mitigation, or monitoring engagements
  • Five or more years of experience working in one of more of the following domains: threat management, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, trade compliance, export controls, sanctions, supply chain security, data analytics and/or compliance monitoring
  • Past direct experience working with, or within, US government agencies on regulatory, national security, enforcement, or trade compliance matters is preferred
  • Previous experience in a client-facing role for a professional services environment (law firm or consulting) is preferred

Qualifications and specialist skills

  • Excellent business writing skills
  • Ability to adapt and excel in complex, dynamic and high-stakes scenarios
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Willing to travel up to 40%
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
  • Strong technical skills with an ability to plan and manage comprehensive reviews of various data sources within an enterprise
  • Past direct experience working with, or within, US government agencies on regulatory matters preferred
  • Due to the national security implications of this role, it is open only to US citizens who do not hold dual citizenship with another country.

Behaviors

  • All employees are expected to display behaviors reflective of our company values: Integrity and Ethics, Collaboration and Teamwork, Commitment to People and Professionalism and Excellence.

The base salary range for this position is $170,000-$185,000 per year. Exact compensation offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
