CLASS DEFINITION
A Public Works Inspector I ensures that contractors comply with specifications, standards and codes for minor public construction projects by performing on-site inspections on highway, street, bridge, water and wastewater systems facilities, conduits or other minor construction projects. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek, but may be required to work evening, weekend and holiday hours on a 24-hour on-call basis. Work is performed outdoors where incumbents are exposed to construction sites, inclement weather, dust, noise and traffic. Some positions require working in confined spaces with high voltage cables. Work requires minimal physical exertion; however, there may be periods of prolonged standing or walking.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
AND
EXPERIENCE: Have three years of experience in performing construction inspection work.
OR
EQUIVALENCY NOTES: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit. PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of construction methods and procedures.
Knowledge of concrete mixing and pouring.
Knowledge of City construction codes and specifications.
Knowledge of the installation, repair and removal of underground electrical equipment in conduits.
Knowledge of the City codes for the use of the conduits.
Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications for electrical work.
Ability to inspect construction projects to ensure compliance with construction specifications, standards and codes.
Ability to draw, read and interpret diagrams.
Ability to complete routine forms and reports and to maintain a daily inspection log.
Ability to enter and retrieve data in database.
Ability to perform simple field tests on construction materials.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with others.
Ability to communicate effectively.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Background Check
Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.
Probation
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month's probation.
Eligibility
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
Education Accreditation
Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
SELECTION PROCESS

The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. EXAMINATION PROCESS
Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the minimum qualifications for this recruitment. Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least six months.
The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete supplemental questions to further examine specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of the position. Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.
NOTE: Those eligibles who are under final consideration for appointment to some positions in this class will be required to authorize the release of criminal conviction information.
Some positions in this class require wearing fire retardant uniforms and electrical hazard shoes.
