Tax Resolution Specialist

Check is an embedded payroll platform helping partners launch and scale payroll businesses. The Tax Resolution Specialist will triage and resolve payroll tax notices, investigate root causes, work with federal/state/local agencies, and collaborate with product, engineering, and operations to reduce risk and improve long-term processes.

Skills

  • 3–5 years payroll tax compliance, tax notice resolution, or payroll operations experience
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations
  • Experience communicating with tax agencies and pursuing abatements
  • Familiarity with payroll systems, tax filing platforms, or case management tools
  • Ability to translate complex tax issues into clear, partner-facing communication
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities

Responsibilities

  • Triage and prioritize incoming tax notices and manage a notice resolution queue
  • Investigate root causes of payroll filing and payment issues across federal, state, and local agencies
  • Communicate directly with agencies to resolve notices, pursue penalty abatements, and secure outcomes
  • Provide clear, timely updates to partners and internal stakeholders
  • Identify trends and surface systemic issues to product, engineering, and compliance teams
  • Maintain and refine standard operating procedures for notice handling and agency outreach
  • Collaborate with Payroll Ops, R&D, and Revenue to streamline workflows and reduce risk

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Relevant certifications or coursework in payroll/tax (preferred but not required)
