The Loan Screening Principal Associate reports to the Head of Affordable Screening and is primarily responsible for the pre-qualification and structuring of new FHA loan opportunities. This role requires a high degree of autonomy, involving the preparation and review of sizing models and screening briefs for submission to Underwriting.
A key aspect of the role is to align with established FHA originators. The Principal Associate will engage with assigned originators to assess their portfolios, identify emerging opportunities, and support them in screening new loan opportunities. Occasional support for sales functions is also required, which may include coordinating with borrowers, attending borrower events, and participating in other sales opportunities.
Furthermore, this role involves supporting the training, development, and work product of the broader Screening Team. The Principal Associate will also undertake other duties as necessary to support the goals and objectives of the CRE platform, working directly with originators, the Chief Underwriter, DCUs, and Credit oversight to structure transactions for Engagement Letters and approval.
Responsibilities:
Manage the end-to-end screening process for new FHA loans, from initial request to Engagement Letter issuance.
Coordinating with various stakeholders on structuring, sizing, and pricing to ensure efficiency for the client and the platform.
Engage directly with borrowers through kick-off calls, information gathering, and initial marketing activities.
Understand and navigate complex transactions, including intricate borrower structures and unique property/market characteristics.
Ensure high-quality outputs for all screening deliverables to Underwriting and Engagement Letters to borrowers.
Assist in maintaining and growing business by sustaining relationships with contacts and customers.
Accurately identify all exceptions and risks associated with transactions and propose mitigation strategies.
Maintain a thorough understanding and adhere to all policies and procedures of the Bank and the Line of Business.
Oversee the Screening Pipeline for your Line of Business (LOB), offering guidance during routine meetings.
Review the work of analysts assisting with prescreens.
Cultivate strong relationships with Origination and Underwriting counterparts.
Attend industry conferences and client meetings to foster crucial relationships.
Identify opportunities for special projects that can enhance efficiency or credit effectiveness, aligning with overall strategy.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree or military experience
At least 2 years of experience in underwriting or screening FHA loans
Preferred Qualifications:
At least 3 years of experience in underwriting or screening FHA loans
Familiarity with the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Affordable product suite or interest in developing a comprehensive understanding of those products

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $127,500 - $145,500 for Prin Associate, CRE Loan Screening
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
