Assistant, International Scouting

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The Boston Red Sox International Scouting Department is committed to identifying and acquiring impact amateur and professional talent globally and integrating them into our player development system. We empower our staff to grow as individuals while we strive as a team to be at the forefront of the industry’s best practices in relation to player evaluation, analytical methods and staff development.


POSITION OVERVIEW:

An office-based position that works closely with department leadership to provide support across all areas of International Scouting operations. Primary functions will be:


  • Power-using decision-making and valuation materials for player analysis and evaluation.
  • Driving progress and improvements in the international amateur player acquisition processes.
  • Oversight of collection, mapping, and cleaning process for international video and data.
  • International travel for support of remote scouting staff and in-person player evaluation.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Implement and improve systems across all areas of the International Scouting operation with a focus on advancements in workflow, tools, evaluative methods, decision-making, and staff development.
  • Assist department leadership in player check-listing processes and comprehensive analysis for potential acquisitions.
  • Collaborate across Baseball Operations domains to identify and drive research opportunities that will enhance player evaluation.
  • Evaluate international amateur players using a hybrid approach of video and live scouting.
  • Assist in oversight of department Associate and their development.
  • Own a heavy workload of administrative tasks including, but not limited to:
  • Maintaining and enhancing departmental information and communication platforms.
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally to manage collection and quality control of video and data streams.
  • Work closely with remote staff and help coordinate and manage data collection initiatives and troubleshoot issues. 


COMPETENCIES:
  • Ability to build, cultivate, and leverage genuine relationships.
  • Ability to connect with and respect people from different backgrounds and cultures, including players, families, coaches, agents, trainers, and others.
  • Command of player valuation frameworks and principles.
  • Aptitude for player evaluation and analysis within the International Scouting market.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of modern baseball metrics and contemporary player development practices.
  • Ability to act as a strong resource for leadership in the planning and execution of departmental priorities and processes.


ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proficiency with modern database technologies including SQL is preferred
  • Proficiency with one or more statistical programming languages is preferred (e.g., R, Python)
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office required
  • Ability to speak Spanish is preferred, but not required
  • Experience with various video applications like TruMedia, BATS, Synergy, etc. is beneficial but not required
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours as required
  • Willingness to travel and spend significant time in Latin America is preferred
