The Principal AI Engineer, Enterprise AI is a senior individual contributor role responsible for architecting and implementing agentic AI workflows that power BetterUp’s next-generation AI-enabled enterprise platform. This role sits at the intersection of applied AI engineering, workflow orchestration, and enterprise integration, bridging cutting-edge large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI GPT, Anthropic Claude, and Salesforce Agentforce with BetterUp’s proprietary data and systems.

As a technical and thought leader, you will design, prototype, and productionize intelligent agents that automate complex business processes, enhance human decision-making, and unlock new forms of productivity across our enterprise ecosystem. You will work hands-on to connect models, APIs, and data pipelines into cohesive, secure, and scalable AI systems that operate across CRM, HRIS, and analytics environments.

This role partners closely with GTM, Engineering, Product, and AI/ML teams to:

• Lead the development of multi-agent orchestration frameworks for dynamic enterprise workflows
• Integrate LLMs and external APIs into contextual, secure, and compliant solutions
• Establish best practices for AI observability, safety, and continuous improvement
• Shape BetterUp’s Enterprise AI architecture strategy, driving alignment between experimentation and production scalability

Key Responsibilities

• Design and build agentic AI systems that connect multiple LLMs (e.g., OpenAI GPT, Anthropic Claude, Salesforce Agentforce) into cohesive, goal-oriented workflows supporting enterprise use cases.
• Lead the end-to-end development lifecycle of AI workflows, from prototyping and experimentation to production deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
• Integrate AI models with enterprise data and platforms including Salesforce, Workday, and internal APIs to deliver context-aware, compliant, and secure automation.
• Architect orchestration frameworks that enable dynamic task routing, decision reasoning, and multi-agent collaboration across systems and teams.
• Establish best practices for AI safety, observability, and governance in collaboration with Security, GRC, and Compliance teams to ensure responsible AI development aligned with emerging standards such as ISO 42001.
• Drive technical alignment between AI experimentation and enterprise production systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance of deployed AI agents.
• Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to identify high-impact automation opportunities that improve productivity, insight generation, and decision quality across the organization.
• Mentor and guide cross-functional teams on AI design patterns, prompt engineering, and system integration, fostering a culture of innovation and technical excellence.
• Stay ahead of industry trends in LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and agentic architectures to continuously evolve BetterUp’s Enterprise AI strategy.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years building AI-powered or data-intensive systems in production environments.
• Proven experience designing and deploying LLM-based or multi-agent systems using platforms such as OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, LangChain, LlamaIndex, or Agentforce.
• Strong foundation in Python, TypeScript, or similar languages with deep understanding of API design, orchestration frameworks, and microservices architecture.
• Experience integrating AI models with enterprise systems (e.g., Salesforce, Workday, ServiceNow, or similar platforms).
• Familiarity with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), vector databases, and context management for enterprise-scale applications.
• Working knowledge of AI observability, model evaluation, and safety frameworks, including approaches for guardrails, content filtering, and governance.
• Understanding of data security, privacy, and compliance considerations for enterprise AI, including GDPR, SOC2, and emerging standards such as ISO 42001.
• Demonstrated ability to prototype rapidly while maintaining production-grade standards for scalability, resilience, and maintainability.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills with the ability to translate between technical depth and business outcomes across Product, Security, and Engineering teams.

At BetterUp, we compensate our employees fairly for their work. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, residence location, as well as market indicators. The range below is representative of base salary only and does not include equity, sales bonus plans (when applicable) and benefits. This range may be modified in the future.

The base salary range for the role is $232,000 to $366,000.
