Opto Mechanical Engineer
Skills
- Proficiency in CAD with ability to produce detailed engineering drawings to industry standards
- Strong understanding of thermal and structural analysis and their impact on optical performance
- Hands-on fabrication and prototyping skills (machining, sheet metal, injection molding, 3D printing)
- Experience integrating electronic components into mechanical designs
- Experience with product development, hardware testing, and interdisciplinary engineering projects
- Eligible to obtain and maintain U.S. Secret security clearance
Responsibilities
- Own hardware development lifecycle from concept generation through prototype, test, failure analysis, and production transition.
- Design and develop infrared and LIDAR-based detection hardware and opto-mechanical subsystems.
- Define top-level system architecture trades and execute rigorous opto-mechanical designs.
- Integrate electronics (motors, controllers, sensors) into mechanical assemblies and systems.
- Lead system integration activities into LIDAR and detection platforms across various vehicle and fielded form factors.
- Build prototypes, conduct lab and field testing, analyze failures, and iterate designs.
- Support customer-facing hardware demonstrations and travel to test sites as required.
- Collaborate with optical, software, and systems teams to ensure successful system performance and manufacturability.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Advanced degree preferred but not required
