Job Description

The Corporate Counsel position supports IMCO (International Marketing Commercial Operations) and IMAP (International Market Access and Pricing) by providing legal counsel and strategic advice on healthcare-related legal issues, including advertising, promotion, antitrust, market access, pricing, reimbursement, healthcare fraud, abuse, and anti-bribery, for both on-market and pipeline products. The primary focus is on international strategic priorities, and this role reports directly to the Senior Counsel for IMCO and IMAP.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Serve as the strategic and legal lead counsel for pharmaceutical brands and provide in-depth substantive advice to the Marketing, Medical Affairs, Market Access, and Regulatory Affairs departments concerning a broad range of legal, regulatory, and compliance issues.
  • Provide clear advice to business clients and senior legal management on core international and key markets’ laws and regulations, focusing on areas of promotion, patient support, payer access, go-to-market strategies, labeling, and scientific exchange.
  • Identify and anticipate risks and opportunities and devise appropriate business-oriented solutions to maximize market access and brand strategies internationally.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on assigned Therapeutic Areas, brands, and projects for international affiliates' legal teams and educate, inform, or guide the team as appropriate, while staying connected across the organization.
  • Keep abreast of changes in laws and develop knowledge of AbbVie’s business and supported client areas, as well as the market access environment of AbbVie’s international key markets.
  • Where key strategic or unanticipated issues arise impacting more than one affiliate, lead the coordination across affiliates and other attorneys to successfully resolve them.
  • Resolve routine to highly complex legal matters in practice areas without supervision using negotiation skills and legal expertise; guide and coordinate legal support to affiliate lawyers where required on assigned projects. Execute core job responsibilities in a timely manner.
  • Identify complex to highly complex legal issues related to assigned significant strategic matters; propose solutions and align on business and legal high-risk matters with maturity to challenge, enable, or escalate as needed.
  • To the extent that complex problems or specific technical expertise are required, select and direct the work of outside counsel, define project objectives, and manage the project and budget.
  • Work cross-functionally and find solutions for business clients consistent with the law, policies/procedures, and AbbVie’s Code of Conduct.

This role can sit in any regionally based U.S. corporate location.

Qualifications

  • J.D. required (United States) or Law degree from a relevant jurisdiction
  • Fluency in English
  • Minimum 8+ years of relevant experience (previous pharma experience and exposure to international or major markets outside of the US strongly preferred)
  • Experience with country-specific or international Market Access/Managed Health Care matters is desirable
  • Experience in supporting senior business leaders
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills as well as a strong sense of agility, independent decision-making, and integrity, with proven ability to work effectively in diverse and cross-border teams.
