The West Virginia University Health System, the state’s largest health system and largest private employer, comprises 18 hospitals throughout the state and bordering states. In addition, it includes five institutes, as well as providing management services for other local hospitals through affiliate agreements.
The West Virginia University School of Medicine (WVUSOM) Department of Family Medicine Residency Program trains family physicians to deliver comprehensive, coordinated care. Our program currently includes 18 Residents and 1 Population Health Fellow, offering extensive clinical experience across two primary care sites, Sundale Nursing Home, and the WVU Medicine Hospital System.
The Department of Family Medicine Advocacy Fellowship Director (0.30 FTE/0.70 cFTE) is responsible for the Department’s program-wide curricular elements in family medicine advocacy. This role ensures residents and fellows are trained in the multidimensional aspects of advocating for patients and communities within local, state, and national systems. The Director works collaboratively with the Vice Chair of Education, Residency Program Director, and central GME leadership. The Advocacy Fellowship Director reports directly to the Department Chair.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Leadership & Administration
Oversee residency advocacy training and establish a new Family Medicine Advocacy Fellowship.
Develop and enhance advocacy curricula to meet ACGME Family Medicine Program Requirements.
Create assessment opportunities for resident learning using ACGME milestones.
Provide resources for elective advocacy experiences.
Develop, implement, and continuously improve the advocacy fellowship curriculum, aligning with organizational mission and accreditation standards.
Define program goals, objectives, and measurable outcomes for advocacy, leadership, and policy impact.
Recruit, select, and onboard fellowship candidates annually.
Manage program budget, resources, and partnerships with local, state, and national advocacy organizations.
Teaching & Mentorship
Provide direct instruction, workshops, and seminars on legislative advocacy, public health policy, health equity, media engagement, and grassroots organizing.
Mentor fellows on individualized advocacy projects, research, and policy initiatives.
Facilitate experiential learning, including legislative visits, coalition-building, and leadership training.
Residency and Departmental Responsibilities
Serve on the residency Curriculum Committee as relevant.
Participate in local, regional, and/or national legislative committees, actively engaging residents in this work.
Contribute to departmental faculty development, research, and scholarly activities.
Program Evaluation & Scholarship
Assess program effectiveness through evaluations, feedback, and outcomes tracking.
Support fellows in scholarly dissemination of advocacy projects via publications, presentations, and community reports.
Contribute to institutional scholarship in advocacy education and workforce development.
Clinical Activities
Maintain clinical practice at a departmental family health center.
Perform inpatient clinical duties as contracted.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Candidate must have an MD or DO degree or foreign equivalent and be eligible for state medical license. Successful candidates must have completed a family medicine residency program and be board eligible/certified in Family Medicine. All qualifications must be met by the time of appointment.
