2027-2028 General Surgical Pathology Fellow

Current Employees: If you are currently employed at any of the Universities of Wisconsin, log in to Workday to apply through the internal application process.

Job Category:

Academic Staff

Employment Type:

Terminal (Fixed Term)

Job Profile:

Clinical Instructor

Job Duties:

The one-year non-ACGME certified fellowship provides a competitive, all-around educational experience designed to develop outstanding broad diagnostic and leadership skills in surgical pathology. The fellow works in the fully subspecialized, academic surgical pathology division that accessions approximately 60000 in-house and over 2000 extramural surgical pathology cases annually and is staffed by 30 surgical pathologists representing all subspecialties including renal, pediatric and transplant pathology. The division provides anatomic pathology services for the University of Wisconsin Hospital, the Middleton Memorial VA hospital and the UW Health Outreach hospitals. The division collaborates closely with the clinical specialists at the NCI-designated UW Carbone Cancer Center and the UW Health Transplant Center, one of the busiest organ transplant centers in the country. The department has a modern workspace with widely adopted telepathology services, and in-house research (TRIP) and molecular diagnostic laboratories. The program is flexible and suits both academically oriented fellows and those aiming for general private practice, possibly as a bridge year to a subspecialty fellowship.

The general surgical pathology fellow will participate in core subspecialty sign out including GI/Hepatobiliary, Breast/Gynecologic, GU, ENT, Thoracic, Bone and Soft Tissue pathology, Frozen Section "hot seat", and optional Outreach Pathology at Meriter Hospital, which includes a combination of general surgical pathology sign out duties. Unique educational opportunities that are often limited in many similar fellowships nationwide are offered based on the future needs of the trainee. These include perinatal and placental pathology, laboratory leadership, administration and lab quality training, and electives in the following subspecialties: renal and renal transplant pathology, medical lung and heart and heart/lung transplant pathology, neuropathology, and molecular and infectious disease pathology as applicable to the anatomic pathologist.

  • Terminal, 12 month appointment

  • This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • The fellow will perform duties of academic surgical pathologist including diagnostic interpretation of H&E and ancillary diagnostic tests for both in-house cases and extramural consultations, participation in multidisciplinary conferences, frozen section and surgical pathology call coverage, gross room supervision, and at the microscope teaching of residents and medical students. The fellow will be required to complete at least one quality improvement project, educational initiative, or research project with a subspecialty faculty mentor with the expectation that this project will lead to conference presentation and publication. Based on the evaluation of the fellow's proficiency and performance, independent sign out of 1-2 weeks on each of the core services with faculty back up will be expected.
