Purpose

To participate in the planning and delivery of academic advising/counseling services and programs that promote comprehensive educational opportunities for students.

Responsibilities

  • ACADEMIC ADVISING: Provide information and advice to students regarding degree requirements, major exploration, enrichment opportunities, academic policies, institutional rules, registration changes, and campus resources. Facilitate student petitions for exceptions to policy and convey decisions to the student. Review an updated degree audit before each advising session. Advise students regarding course selection during registration, orientation, and throughout the year. Provide information to students regarding institutional and community resources that may be useful in pursuit of academic goals and/or personal well-being.  Make appropriate referrals for non-academic student issues.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES: Maintain accuracy of student records by updating majors and minors, completing petitions for degree modifications, and override requests. Maintain accurate advising records in Toolkit. Review and decide on late registration requests. Process registration changes. Review submitted appeals for requests outside of college or institutional academic policy. Participate in appeals meetings and engage in discussions with professionalism, respect, empathy, and a commitment to finding neutral outcomes. Review and process student inquires and academic correspondence such as financial aid, reinstatement, senior status letter, max hours, full time status exceptions, and Veteran Affairs letters. Track students with academic difficulty and monitor students on scholastic probation. Review and process graduation applications. Certify students for December, August, and May graduation, and add honors designations for each candidate. Notify students who do not satisfy their requirements for graduation. Verify progress toward degree of V A students as well as student-athletes. Take on special projects as requested and attend regular meetings.
  • STUDENT OUTREACH: Plan and participate in workshops, outreach, college and university wide programs, new student orientation and graduation ceremonies; assist with other college outreach events when called upon to do so. Lead First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs), and Transfer-Interest Groups (TrIGs) by collaborating with their student mentors to plan weekly lessons that include guest speakers and information on campus resources and disseminate academic information.
  • COMMUNICATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Creates reports upon request; attend monthly College Advisor Meetings, committee meetings; participating in office meetings and decision-making; cooperating with other departmental and campus offices; communicating and collaborating with colleagues and supervisor(s); attends and participates in training opportunities including Academic Counseling Association (ACA); identifies/attends classes that bolster skills. Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and six years of experience working with college students in an academic advising capacity or master’s degree in a related field and four years of experience in advising, group work, assessment and administration of college students' academic programs.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional experience beyond the required. Master's degree and four years of experience described above or extensive experience in advising group work, assessment, and administration of college students' academic programs. Ability to relate well with college students, staff, and faculty. Experience certifying undergraduates at UT/Austin.

Salary Range

$50,000 + depending on qualifications

Employment Eligibility:

Regular staff who have been employed in their current position for the last six continuous months are eligible for openings being recruited for through University-Wide or Open Recruiting, to include both promotional opportunities and lateral transfers. Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
