The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History is a special collections library (200,000 volumes), archive (90,000 linear feet) and museum that facilitates research and education by acquiring, preserving, and making accessible research collections and by sponsoring exhibitions, conferences, symposia, oral history projects, publications, fellowships, and grant-funded initiatives.
Purpose
Research and Collections Student Assistants at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History acquaint participants with its resources, services, and operations, and provide experience with specific projects. The knowledge and experience interns gain enrich their undergraduate studies and research. The career competencies gained include:
Responsibilities
Assist the staff of Research and Collections Division with clerical tasks including searching book titles in library catalog, scanning historical books and documents with an overhead scanner, using editing software to watermark scanned images, data entry, invoicing, and other tasks as assigned. Successful applicants should have excellent communication skills and the ability to learn quickly and adapt to changes in deadlines and working conditions.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Exposure to standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Use of manual dexterity. Molds, dust, and other air-borne allergens may be present. Ability to lift numerous 50lb boxes during three-to-four-hour period of time.
Temporary appointment beginning ASAP. Appointed by semester. 19 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9:00-5:00. Schedule to be arranged with supervisor on semester basis.
